Carrots. That's what it's come down to.

Carrots.

It's been a terrible day, the sun too hot, the wind too dead, sweat trickling down her face and Sunyoung is just tired. And now Seokjin is sitting at the table eating carrots, not just any carrots, but specifically the carrots she'd picked out to make herself orange-glazed carrots because she deserves a treat after such a long day and she walked into the kitchen just a moment ago, the screen door slamming shut behind her, and there's was Seokjin, munching on her carrots, raw, feeding the ends to Kookie who's practically standing on his back feet leaping for joy and Sunyoung doesn't say anything, just turns around and walks out back to the shady spot beneath the oak tree in the yard, overlooking the smoky greys and blues of the mountains far away on the horizon, and breathes.

Later, she'll walk back into the kitchen, smile, pat Kookie on the head and make herself a nice salad. But for right now, it's just her, and the quiet, the empty taste in her mouth that's she'd wanted to fill with orange. She can almost taste it, lurking past the tip of her tongue, almost there and yet elusive.
