I really wanted changeling Yibo, so I wrote it. Yes. Fae!au.
The rest of the world continues on, completely and utterly oblivious to Yibo’s sudden disappearance.
“Are you disappointed?” Wenhan asks, regarding Yibo with a calculated look as they stand at the edge of the forest. Behind them is the path that leads to the rift - one of the few places where the fae can cross from their own world to the human world. In just a few moments, Yibo will take the journey for the first time.
It's exciting, daunting, terrifying.
Yibo looks out over the ridge, watching the city lights twinkle and dance down in the valley below. He doesn’t meet Wenhan’s piercing gaze. “About what?”
“That nobody misses you.”
Yibo closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. It hurts, yes, but he’s not disappointed. He had never belonged to the human world and he knows it. “It’s better this way,” he says. “They didn’t want me. Never wanted me.”
“They didn’t deserve you.”
Yibo opens his eyes, glancing to the side at Wenhan. He smiles, a lazy smirk toying at the corners of his mouth. “Nobody deserves me.”
Wenhan returns the smile. “You learn quickly, young one. You’ll fit right in at the Winter Court.”
There are a thousand insecurities whirring through Yibo’s head, all hidden under a carefully constructed facade. He doesn’t argue with Wenhan, but he can’t help but wonder… does a place where he fits in actually exist?
