First word from formal.
"It is insupportable," the Duchess announced as she swept into the Mistress' study grandly, "that such a noble family as the Kims should have been excluded from the ball, utterly insupportable. I hope you have a good explanation, daughter-in-law of mine, else woe betide you."
From where she sat, the housekeeper watched as the Duchess' daughter-in-law shrunk, her shoulders curling in on themselves, and although she was not a woman prone to thinking mean thoughts of others, she felt a sharp pang of satisfaction as she watched the temporary Mistress of the House get her comeuppance.
"Mother," the daughter-in-law squeaked, her voice weak with surprise, "I did not know you had returned."
The Duchess, who had made a round of the room to check that everything was still in order, eventually seated herself in the remaining seat in the room, fixing her daughter-in-law with an icy glare. "I was called back to town after I received the most alarming missive from my good friend, Mrs _____ Kim. I am sure I do not need to impart its contents to you."
"I—" the daughter-in-law stuttered, her fingers fidgeting with the pages of the household accounts in her hand.
"I do not think I need to remind you of your own background, missy," the Duchess continued sharply. "Simply because your position in society has increased significantly in your marriage to my son does not give you the right to exclude those your inflated ego deem lower than you, especially if they are in fact of a more elevated status than you could ever hope for or dream of."
