[Team Three] Fairy King

“But it’s made of papier-mâché.”

Hashimoto fixed Shintaro with a stern look. “It’s a castle. It doesn’t have to be real, it’s just a vintage eight, to help you see it in your mind.”

Shintaro opened his mouth, but Hashimoto didn’t let him voice any of his objections. “Concentrate,” Hashimoto instructed, and Shintaro snapped his mouth shut and stared at the papier-mâché castle.

High, sturdy walls. A big gate. Towers. Windows. He stretched his mind, felt his magical core bubble up and flow through the picture into the rift between space and time, felt his mind fill this space, felt the castle grow, become more and more tangible until it was almost, almost real.

There was moss growing between the stones, green-brown moss and grey stones. Rough, grey stones, strong and heavy. A wooden gate. A moat around the castle, filled with dirty water. A flag on the highest tower. His feet were almost, almost touching the ground, his wings fluttering in the wind that was making the flag snap high above.

“Come back.”

Hashimoto’s voice yanked him back, into his body, wingless and warm. “Ow.” The headache was expected but no less unpleasant for that.

Shintaro found himself engulfed by Hashimoto’s arms suddenly, the warmth of the embrace brushing away the last of the cobwebs clinging to his mind. “You did it! You built your fairy castle on the very first try!”
