[team sonic] die alive
First words from what are friends for? (getting into trouble with).
Title from Break Free feat. Zedd by Ariana Grande.
"Shit, they're coming back!"
Wenhan's voice is loud, panicked in the dark, and Sungjoo takes off running. Wenhan can take care of himself, after all he can swim like a fish and with the water so close—Sungjoo isn't so lucky.
I knew I should have learned how to swim! he mentally berates himself, but hindsight is 20/20 and he's always been too busy, leaving it till tomorrow, always helping everyone else out first. Now the realization that he might have signed his own death certificate claws rusty at his throat, the sharp breaths cutting through the frozen air as his feet slip and slide on the icy concrete, if he's not careful he'll lose his footing and maybe even break something, but he can't afford to slow down.
Not when the hounds are coming.
He can feel their red eyes boring into his back, the sharp absence of sound they bring in their wake, every living thing curling into a ball and hiding from their presence.
"Beware the hounds," his mother always said, and Sungjoo had thought it was only a funny joke, a story to scare children with, until he'd seen them himself. Renegade robots, not even vaguely humanlike, but rather completely and irrevocably designed for one purpose.
To destroy.
No one knows anymore who made them or where they came from, but they're completely unstoppable, and as Sungjoo gasps, pain bubbling in his chest, he doesn't much care about anything except whether he's going to die.
Maybe I should just throw myself into the water, the thought crosses his mind. After all, drowning has to be better than being torn apart, still alive, still screaming—everyone has seen all that's left of hound victims, after the screams have died down to silence and the sun has emerged again.
The red eyes are drawing closer now, and Sungjoo stares at the line of the shore approaching, trying to make up his mind.
