[team two] the port of incheon

i'm only a little late, wohoo! this is kind of a little mermaid AU, because of ariel!baek (ty fandom lol) at the korea dome. i might write more someday :D

ALSO, some historical inaccuracies there (i bet no one cares but me)... i was thinking this is set in the 19th century but at that time, they didn't use wons in korea, but muns and yangs XD; oh well. anyway!

130 won was how much Chanyeol made a month, working on the ship. It wasn’t much, and most of it he sent off to his mother and sister, who lived in a cramped apartment in a small village, a day trip away from the port. He wrote long letters to go with the money, because he knew his mother would always worry about his well-being, and often not in vain – many sailors did go missing or lost their lives during the long voyages those days. Chanyeol didn’t want to lie to his mother, so he often left out the miserable parts of the trips: the storms or sicknesses or constant hunger or dangers of pirates and sirens. Those excluded, he usually enjoyed his time on board.

Since he was a little kid, Chanyeol had loved the sea and had always known that he wanted to become a sailor when he grew up. There was something about the vast and unpredictable ocean that was captivating to him, and the excitement of sailing away from familiar shores to the faraway and unknown lands hadn’t faded. So most of the time, the trips were totally worth the hardships in Chanyeol’s opinion.

On that particular night, the ship was moored on the bay close to the port because they had been stocking up earlier that day and were to set the course towards the East China Sea at dawn. Chanyeol felt giddy, like always before a long voyage, and didn’t feel like sleeping so he had grabbed his lute and tiptoed up on the deck. He sat on the gunwale near the prow and looked over the amazingly calm bay, at the glowing lights of the port that were reflected on the dark water. He thought about his mother and sister in passing, hoping that the letter and the money he had sent would find them safely. He then lifted the lute on his lap, strumming the strings softly.

Besides the sea, Chanyeol had always loved music. Most of his fellow sailors also liked singing and dancing to pass time during the long journeys, and at the foreign ports Chanyeol had seen and heard all kinds of music. He had bought the lute in Guangzhou, from an old merchant who had said it was originally from Europe. He didn’t know if it was true or not but yet had spent all his money on the instrument, and had been playing it ever since. Chanyeol liked to think he had become quite good at playing. None of the crew at least complained (that much) when he played.

Chanyeol started playing and humming a song he had heard a couple of times down in the south around Busan, about a beautiful girl who loves a sailor who then goes missing after a storm and shipwreck. Chanyeol liked all the bittersweet love songs, even though he didn’t know much about love himself. He got absorbed into the song and eventually started singing, and after the song ended, he immediately started off another one.

It took Chanyeol a while to notice the soft humming voice that was there beneath his own voice and the tunes of the lute. He stopped playing, glancing over his shoulder but the dark deck was as deserted as before. He could still hear the humming. The voice was soft, so velvety that Chanyeol had never heard anything like that before. He then glanced down and almost dropped his lute in the waves.

There, down against the hull of the ship, was a person – or something that looked like a person, because when Chanyeol took a better look after the first jolt, he could actually see a tail in the water. Good Heavens, they are real! was all Chanyeol could think of when staring at the mermaid – merman, actually –, dumbfounded and terrified. It had flaming red hair, and was fair-skinned, slender and absolutely beautiful, and Chanyeol could hear all the stories of mermaids dragging careless sailors underwater and drowning them repeat in his brain. And yet he could only sit there and stare down at the creature.

Eventually the merman stopped humming, upon noticing the lack of music and Chanyeol saw it raise its eyes up to him. It definitely looked like a young man, and its gaze was piercing and bright under the red locks. They stared at each other for the longest time, until finally the merman turned away and disappeared under the water with a splash. Chanyeol blinked, like being woken up from a trance. He quickly scrambled up and backed away from the gunwale, squeezing the lute in his hands.

With wobbly legs and overall feeling kind of shaky, Chanyeol slowly returned back down under the deck and laid down on his bunk bed under Jongin’s. He didn’t sleep a second during the rest of the night. And after the encounter, when he did sleep, more often than not his dreams were filled with a red-haired merman.

Chanyeol didn’t think he would ever see the merman, or any merman, ever again. But he was wrong. The next time he saw the flaming red hair and the bright eyes, was around two weeks later when he was about to drown in the stormy sea.
