[Team SONIC] Back to the skies
Starting words from here.
Rolling around in my Star Wars AU again.
Things would look better after a nap. Actually that was Kitayama’s motto but Nikaido felt that the Red Leader wasn’t entirely wrong with that particular piece of advice. Although sleep probably wouldn’t come to him as easily as it usually did for the other.
Nikaido closed his eyes and when he couldn’t fall asleep, he just listened. He listened to the sound of the fighters whizzing past above him as they shot out of the hangar and off into space. Slowly, he opened his eyes again to look up at the sky above him. He smiled as he got the fighter models right just by listening to the sounds he could catch with his ears. He was close enough to still hear them but far enough so that he wouldn’t risk ruining his ears.
It was so good to be back on a planet base - as opposed to out in space. Nikaido liked to be surrounded by green and nature - and dozens of other loud colours - to be surrounded by something living. Well aside from people that is.
“#@%▽▲!!”
“Give me five more minutes, S2-DU. Kitayama can wait that long.” Nikaido grumbled at the droid. “He takes even longer to get his ass up than I do.”
“▲%▽@@#&.”
“Alright, alright. I’m coming.” Nikaido huffed and got up from his comfortable moss bed. “Where am I supposed to go?” He followed the droid. It wasn’t leading him to the usual hangar though but the big loading bay. Just before they could enter one of the buildings, a large shadow covered them and Nikaido looked up. A freighter. And it wasn’t the one that supplied them with the necessities or weapons. It was too big for that.
“There you are, Nika!” Senga ran up to him and yelled over the noise of the landing ship. “Come on! You really want to be there when they unload it!”
Nikaido let the other drag him along. “What’s it carrying?? Why are you so excited?”
“You don’t know? Did you skip the briefing again?” Senga made a face at him.
“Uh, I might have? What if I did?” He made a face back at the other. “Is it so important?”
A new voice joined them once they were inside and some of the sounds were blocked off. “Of course he skipped the meeting. Or he wouldn’t be able to sit still. If he knew what’s on the freighter he’d be alternating between bouncing around excitedly and whining impatiently.”
Yokoo crossed his arms and smiled at the two. “Don’t deny it, Nikaido. We know you.”
“Now you’ve gotten me all worked up. What IS on that thing? What would possibly make me-”
The sound of the hydraulic doors interrupted them and amidst the smoke, the cargo of the large freighter became visible. Nikaido’s eyes widened. He looked at Yokoo, who was still watching the spectacle with a glint of excitement in his eyes. Turning to look at Senga, Nikaido found the other smiling brightly but also with cheeks streaked with tears.
“Kenpi?”
“Nika, they’re ours.” Senga told the other and bit back a sob. “We’ll be flying again. For real.”
When Nikaido placed his hand onto the cool surface of the brand new X-Wing, he could feel something stir inside of him. He wasn’t as sensitive to the Force as others in his group but that didn’t mean he was completely unaffected by it either.
The moment he sat behind the controls of the fighter jet the feeling grew stronger. He was bonding with his new partner.
He really wanted to take his partner out for a maiden flight but Nikaido knew there were a few things that had to be taken care of before he could do so. Patience wasn’t his strong suite but he was a pilot and he knew that some things were absolutely necessary. Flying was great but coming back from a flight alive and in one piece was also kind of important.
“#@%▽♥☆▲!!”
“▽#★☆♥◯@#%◎▽▲!!”
“Nika-chan, your droid says you’re in the cockpit?” Senga’s voice came from somewhere below. Climbing out and jumping back down, Nikaido looked at the other.
“Something wrong?” He asked.
Senga shook his head and smiled. “Just checking.” The next moment, he threw his arms around Nikaido and squeezed the other happily. “I’m happy, Nika. I’m really happy.”
Laughing softly, Nikaido wrapped his arms back around the other. “Me, too, Kenpi.”
“▽#★☆♥♥♥♥♥♥▲◎!!” The droid ‘hooted’. It was catcalling them. Nikaido’s eyebrow twitched and he kicked it - carefully. He’d still need that little fella.
“Shut up, DU. And don’t YOU think about saying anything either, BT. I know you two tend to agree.” He looked at Senga’s S2 unit next to his. It gave him an innocent beep.
He and Senga had gotten the droids together from the scrapyard and customized them for their purposes. Senga was good at tweaking things. They had also gotten a bit of help from some of the other people on the base, mainly Abe from the Snow Squadron. There were no other S2 units like those two.
Speaking of. “I need to check with Watta whether our S2 units will be compatible with these. If not we’ll need to make some adjustments. And get permission.”
“I was thinking about that, too.” Senga nodded. “The old models were compatible with R2 models and a lot with the BB ones as well but I don’t know about the new ones either. And these are brand spanking new. A treat from the general himself, I heard.”
“Well, I’m sure we’ll find out. Aren’t we having a meeting or something about all of this soon?” Nikaido looked at their droids again. “You know about a meeting schedule?”
“#@%▽~♥☆*\3@$$▲!!”
“Ah, I guess everyone’s busy getting acquainted with their partners.” Senga smiled. “We can wait that long, can’t we, Nika?”
“If we have to.” Nikaido sighed. “Let’s just go and ask one of the tech guys. Somebody will have to know. I’d say it works. I looked at the docking place earlier but just to be sure. Don’t want to ruin this baby before our first flight.”
Senga grinned. “Such great care. That’s pretty rare for you, isn’t it?”
Nikaido huffed and rested his arm around Senga’s waist. “There are three things I am always careful with. My fighter, my life and you.”

The droids mention is absolutely adorable (my favorite new character is BB8, so I guess you can tell where my heart lies :P)! And I love all the description about the force, the whirling noises of planes, the hangar etc.
I enjoyed this!^^
And I got excited with Abe's mention, will there be a Snow Man take of this verse? I'll really love to read one!
