[TEAM FOUR] no one told us we'll be fighting monsters

This is the first time I'm writing gfriend and I really don't know much about them so it might be a little OOC? Kinda set in the universe of The Magicians tv and book series by Lev Grossman.

Note: I'm using Sinb's real name here, which is Eunbi. For convenience's sake, Eunbi and Sowon will be the same age.

“I’ll tell you my real name later. If we survive this.”

The last few words were whispered so softly that Eunbi had to crouch closer, the rustling of the leaves from her slight movement earning a reproachful glare from the other girl.

Logically, the second sentence would have caused all the alarm bells to go off in her head. But she has spent enough time in Brakebills to learn that in a world where magic is as real as the gravity holding her down, logic doesn’t work as well. She supposed that whatever stubborn logic her mind clung on to, they would have been left on the leaves and trees she sped past in her frantic run from the terrifying creature in an unknown strange forest. A strange forest which she had somehow managed to travel to, immediately after walking out of the classroom on a bright, sunny and perfectly mundane afternoon.

The pulsing glow of the trees in the forest had served as a sign, or a warning – she doesn’t know – that no, she was not in the school’s compound anymore. Heck, she tried not to let her mind wander to the possibilities of aliens, ghostly occurrences and time travel – all the things she rolled her eyes at in the past.

All she could think of was not letting the ghastly whirl of moths and limbs get near her, for there was something in her rushing blood that told her terrible things would happen if that creature get near her.

Which was why she almost let out a blood-curling scream when a hand, appearing out of nowhere, grabbed her sore wrist and pulled her behind the large trees but her screams were immediately silenced by the palm tightly pressed against her mouth. The soft hands belonged to a girl she has seen walking and sitting alone in school and the familiar face had her almost in tears of relief.

But now that the momentary thrill and relief wore off, she felt alarm and suspicions of the girl creeping into her narrowed eyes. “What do you mean your “real name”? I know your name! It’s Sowon! I’ve seen you around in school-”

“Really? You want to do this now? I thought not getting The Beast’s attention is more of an urgent priority right now?” Sowon hissed but her eyes are focused on what lies beyond the tree trunk, a fair and wise thing to do, Eunbi conceded sheepishly.

The forest lapped into an uneasy silence but it seems safe enough for both girls to settle against the tree trunk, their clenched muscles letting go of the tautness slowly. Finding a branch next to her, Sowon crept to a nearby area that was not overgrown with grass and gripped the stick tight in her right hand. Her lips open and close in quick mutterings and when she finally looked up, Eunbi already had a vague notion of her intentions, based on the slight embarrassed redness in her cheeks and the strange way her lips pursed into a line before speaking.

“Maybe you would like to help me? My specialty isn’t in protective and shield spells.” There was still a trace of the other girl’s usual haughtiness but Eunbi wasn’t too bothered. If anything, she was a little excited (in spite of the circumstances) for this was her first time practicing magic outside of the school’s grounds.

She stood into the circle Sowon was drawing around them with the branch, her own voice rising into the air and joining in strength with the other girl’s voice as they repeated the incantations over and over again till she could feel the energy seeping out from her body. The air was no longer stagnant, something was ignited, shifting and vibrating around her and Sowon. The deep corners of her chest resonated with the pulsating energy created within the circle as a wall of white air enveloped them, a manifestation of the successful protective spell casted.

She didn’t know what exactly went through her mind to capitulate herself but that was how she found herself, her arms around the other girl’s tall and slender frame, her nose peeking above thin shoulder. Sowon stood rigid for a moment but soon, hesitantly raised her own arms to snake around Eunbi’s tiny waist in return.

No one said anything and the forest remained silent. For once, the glow of the trees through the translucent wall didn’t seem as uneasy and frightening, but comforting and sheltering.

When they have regained enough strength and energy to cast a spell that will let their schoolmates and professors know of their whereabouts, they sat on the ground, so close that their knees touched.

“If only I thought to fill my pockets with some yogurt bars. I’m so hungry now!” Eunbi exclaimed and her stomach growled so loudly along, as if in agreement with her statement. If she wasn’t sitting close to Sowon, she might have missed the other girl’s soft words in her daydreams of her mother’s kimbap and pork cutlet.

“My real name is Kim Sojung.”

“You’re part of the great and mighty Kim family!” Eunbi should have suspected, the haughtiness and the aloofness that intimidated the students in the school, coupled with the insane ability to perform any and every spell (with exceedingly flying colours too) the professors asked of her.

“Yeah … I didn’t want anyone to know who I am so I told the professors and staffs to call me Sowon. It was a nickname my older brother loved to use.”

Sowon paused, her fingers trailing through her long hair but Eunbi knew there was more and that she was searching for the right words. When the words came, they tumbled out in a hurry but Eunbi heard them all, loud and clear.

“My other brother was one of the students who went missing three years ago and though my parents wanted no more part in this school, I sneaked myself in because I have to find out what happened. I need to know because if I don’t, we will just continue to pretend that he was never part of the family and I cannot let his memory fade away from us… from me.”

Eunbi leaned closer, her ears not only listening to the spoken words, but her eyes saw the sadness in Sowon’s eyes and her heart beat painfully with the other girl’s desperate bid to cling on to anything that might lead to the missing brother.

“The trail has gone cold, with so many students coming in and out of the school over the three years but I can still feel his presence, weak but it’s there nonetheless. Afternoons spent sneaking into the school’s office and the dormitory of the physical magic kids told me that whatever happened to my brother, it did not happen in school. It was after learning about portals into different realms and worlds did I realize that he could be alive, but just in another world that we do not know. I found an old spell in the library that could transport me to the last place any person was seen and this is why I’m here right now.”

“But how-“

“I think I accidentally brought you in here too.”

So it wasn’t some magical power in her that caused her to stumble into a magical forest, that she expected but it still disappointed her that she wasn’t one of the amazing and brilliant Travellers she read about in the Restricted Alcove of the library.

“Where do you think we are though?”

“… I think … we’re in … Fillory.”

Eunbi stared blankly at the girl next to her before her laughter tumbled out of her with lack of control. A magical land in a storybook for kids! Clearly, this is a joke made by Sowon- Sojung. And yet, the honesty and sincerity in the girl’s brown eyes were raw and genuine. A thought hurriedly buried at the back of her mind when she first stepped into the forest now resurfaced again, the mix of fear and excitement intensified in her blood.

If magic is real and Brakebills can be parked in the middle of Seoul, invisible to all but those who are a part of it, what other realms are hidden from sight? Or, what other worlds laid shielded and protected, until someone triggers the door open?

What if Fillory is not just a made-up story, but a real world?

Most importantly, what if Sowon’s brother was still here and they’re just a step away from seeing him?

“We need to go.”

“Eunbi?”

“Sitting here isn’t going to get us out of this place. Neither is it going to help us find your brother. Come on, we both know a spell that can protect us while we’re on the move.”

The hand gripping hers was nervous and scared but she squeezed them reassuringly. No one knew what would happen once they step out of the circle but at least they still had each other.
