[Team Three] Invitation to a ball

Didn't like anything I wrote and after scrapping the past 6 attempts I just wrote something. It's super random, nothing really happens and it's from a fandom from a long time ago and far far away.

Speaking of far away, I am officially going on hiatus now because RL is going to be super extremely busy until probably April. I've told [livejournal.com profile] mousapelli already but just as a reminder.

“Meaningful matches aren’t something that just happens. You have to find them. But you’re in luck, if you play me, every single match is meaningful. So rejoice for the flawless me is going to be your opponent.” Atobe Keigo rose from his seat on the Hyoutei court stands. For some reason an armchair had been set up in the bleachers, between the normal seats. “You better be worth my time. If you aren’t, give up now. I’ll be so kind as to give you a moment to decide.”

Oshitari sighed. “Our captain’s been quite restless lately, hasn’t he?”

Gakuto shrugged. “He isn’t the only one, though. This is the 9th challenger who’s come this week. It’s like people want a chance to play before graduating and possibly changing clubs or whatever. They’ve all been third years from schools all over the place.”

“I’m surprised you actually kept track.” Oshitari raised an eyebrow at the redhead.

“Consider it my way of preparing for what’s to come. Can’t leave everything to Hiroshi.” Gakuto stretched and looked around for the rest of the Hyoutei regulars.

“Ah, Atobe. Are you about to have a match or do you have a minute?” A familiar voice with a thick kansai accent called out from somewhere behind them.

Down on the court, Atobe looked up. “Did you come to challenge me as well or is there something else you wanted, aahn? Must be the latter if the two of you show up here in your uniforms, I guess.” He didn’t even spare the challenger on the other side of the court another glance. “Someone else take care of this. Shishido, how about you?”

“The hell, why should I-”

“Or do you not have what it takes to play singles anymore, aahn?” Atobe asked.

Shishido growled and grabbed his racquet. “I’ll show you.”

With things taken care of, Atobe made his way up to greet the latest visitors. “You came a long way, Ecstasy.” He addressed the one who’d called out to him, Shitenhouji’s Shiraishi. Then he turned to the figure next to the player from Osaka. “And you’re in good company, I see. What a most intriguing pair you make. It’s been a while, Tezuka.”

“Atobe.” The other acknowledged him and nodded as a greeting.

“So what is it that you wanted to talk about?” Atobe crossed his arms.

Shiraishi led them away from the court. “Shitenhouji is hosting a special friendly competition and I’ve come to officially extend an invitation to your team. Seigaku hosted the last training session and he knows the Kantou teams better than I do, so he’s helping out with the organisation.”

“I see.” Atobe nodded. “From the sound of it, it cannot just be some random friendly matches, am I right? There’s more to it.”

“As expected of you, you see right through me.” Shiraishi smiled. “Only third year players are allowed and we’re only playing singles. Matches are decided by lottery. There are two draws, though. One draw is strictly captains only.”

Interest sparked, Atobe chuckled. “That sounds like something that would be worth of my time and presence. I’m in then.” He looked at Tezuka. “Let’s hope we get a chance to settle things this time around, without any interruptions.”

“I’ll look forward to it.” Tezuka replied curtly but there was a fire in his eyes that Atobe noticed almost immediately. Atobe was satisfied to know that his challenges could still ignite that fire in the Seigaku captain.

“Great. We’ll send you the details later. I’ll probably have Kenya send it to your Oshitari, or Tezuka will be in touch with you.” Shiraishi smiled. “I’ll see you on the court next then, King.”

He certainly approved of the way Shiraishi addressed him. Actually he’d come to like the Shitenhouji captain. They got along well and Atobe would even consider calling the other a friend. And that meant something, coming from one Atobe Keigo. “Prepare to lose then, Ecstasy.” Atobe smirked, using the nickname almost affectionately.

A/N: Atobe calling Shiraishi "Ecstasy" was inspired by a skit in Dream Live 7, where Shiraishi, Atobe and Tezuka poke fun at Yukimura and Rikkai Dai's team.
