[Team Two] Mission: Ensnare and Capture

Inspired by some old pics (click spoiler to reveal)~ I wanted to write something vaguely spy-themed! XD Enjoy!

“Him?” Iwamoto asked, quizzically, peering out the penthouse window to fix his gaze upon a dark-haired figure making his way to the building entrance. “Are you sure that’s the guy?” he added, turning to face his partner, dressed similarly in black.

Watanabe laughed with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “Of course,” he said. “How many times did you think I read through the mission brief before coming here?”

He pulled away from the window to check on the traps they had set up. “He’s back a little earlier than his usual schedule though. Maybe our informant isn’t that reliable this time.” Watanabe added, prepared as always to make changes to suit the situation at hand. “Stay on your toes, he’s coming.”

Iwamoto nodded solemnly. Today’s mission was to capture the flamboyant owner of several nightclubs suspected to have ties with the yakuza for interrogation. Their target cycled through several different apartments throughout the week and was scheduled to be in this one tonight.

Iwamoto checked his taser and positioned himself behind a wall. He peered out into the entrance hallway, ready to strike the target the moment he opened the door.

They heard the footsteps coming closer, the jingling of keys as he fished it out of his pockets. Eyes trained on the doorknob, awaiting their target. Suddenly, they heard the squeak of a screw being unbolted, and both of them glanced towards the vents on the ceiling.

The grill lifted open and a small cylinder dropped from the cavity. Iwamoto instinctively turned away, covering his face with his arms, anticipating an explosion. The glass shattered and filled the room with smoke that invaded their lungs, causing them to choke.

The heavy thud of a person landing on the floor reached his ears. Iwamoto opened his eyes to look but the smoke made his eyes water too much. He heard a muffled ‘oof’ that was clearly Watanabe’s voice and panic coursed through his veins.

He crouched low, crawling in the general direction of the balcony door. He reached for it, feeling the smooth glass on his fingertips as he scrambled for the handle. Flipping the lock, the door opened and he thankfully took a deep breath of fresh air. As the smoke filtered out of the room he glanced back and saw Watanabe brandishing a knife towards their assailant; a lean figure wearing a gas mask over his face.

The masked figure backed away, nearly walking into one of the traps they had set, but at the last minute, he caught himself, sidestepping the other way.

“The bastard saw us setting it up,” Iwamoto mused.

When he heard Iwamoto speak up, he turned his attention away from Watanabe, charging towards him instead. Iwamoto took his chance to tase him, successfully meeting his mark and shocking him till he collapsed to the ground.

“Shota, we have to go!” he yelled. Watanabe nodded, sprinting to join him at the balcony.

Together they clipped one end of the wire to their harnesses on the balusters and jumped over the railing, kicking off the wall, they lowered themselves as quickly as they could, but they could already see a crowd gathering.

“The damn pimp got himself some backup!” Watanabe cursed.

Iwamoto spared a second glance. “Those aren’t yakuza backup… They’re policemen?”

“He called the police on us?” Watanabe said in surprise. “I’d say he knows we’re operating in grey area.”

Iwamoto had no time to reply, his feet finally touched the ground and he had to unhook the harness. He spun around, back facing the building, face to face with the cops pointing their guns their way.

“Freeze! Drop your weapons and kneel!”

The duo glanced at the guns and then at each other, weighing their options as quickly as they could. Iwamoto was about to signal Watanabe to run when a familiar face stepped through the barricade of uniformed men with his hands held up in a peaceful gesture.

“Kouchi!” Watanabe yelled, relieved to have someone they knew on the opposing side.

He smiled briefly, his eyes crinkling shut, before the usual look of seriousness crossed his face again. “Just come quietly and no harm will come to you, I promise.”

Something about the situation and the fact that Kouchi had to talk them down like this gave Iwamoto a premonition that things wasn’t going to be quite as simple this time. “What’s going on?” Iwamoto asked, brows furrowing.

“Now’s not the best time to talk, but I can tell you more at the station,” Kouchi replied calmly.

Watanabe cast a look of suspicion towards him but between the guns and the promise of safety from a friend, they didn’t have much of a choice. The duo did as they were told, following their friend silently to the back of the police car.

Everything after that passed in a blur. He remembered how anxious Kouchi was when he was alone with them, his heel tapping impatiently on the ground as he tried to find the right words to say. He took a deep breath, sighing as he messed up his hair.

“You’ve gotten tangled with some really dangerous people this time,” Kouchi told them.

Iwamoto took one good look at the state of him from top to toe. “No shit.”

“The guy you’re after? He’s got the higher ups moving like his marionettes. I had no choice but to bring you in.”

“-or what?” Watanabe snapped, already knowing this wasn’t going to end well.

“Or they would have shot you and pretended you started it! That guy, Matsumura? He’s sly like that!”

Iwamoto had never seen Kouchi angry. Kouchi, who was always sweet and calm, taking everything in with a smile on his face. Iwamoto straightened up in his seat, leaning forward to rest his elbows on the table, handcuffs jingling on his wrists.

“So what’s going to happen to us?”

“You will be held at a facility… For your own safety,” Kouchi added with emphasis in response to the look of discontent on Watanabe’s face.

“You mean prison,” he corrected the other.

Kouchi shrugged. “Call it what you want. But Taiga and I will get you out of there soon, trust me.”
