[team sonic] The Start of The End
I've been kind of MIA lately but I really wanted to do something productive...so trying to restart sonic!
This is kind of a tie in to All The Pieces Left Of You written for

WARNING: There aren't any warnings for this drabble but there are HUGE warnings for the original piece.
The tiny black box is sitting there on his desk. Hokuto imagined he would feel relieved once it was there, he expected that fluttering feeling in his stomach that comes only from the right mix of excitement, anticipation and anxiousness. All he feels as he looks at it though is uneasiness, Taiga hasn’t been answering his calls all day.
Hokuto would say Taiga has been acting strange for weeks, if he could pinpoint what exactly it is he’s doing that is strange. Maybe it’s more in his demeanour in those few hours each day that they get to see each other. It’s not the first time Hokuto has considered that there might be someone else…
He shakes his head to dislodge the thoughts. He knows Taiga is mad at him, he’s cancelled plans a lot over the summer break, enough times that Taiga stopped even try to make plans. It hasn’t been for nothing though. This was their last summer as students, Hokuto’s last chance to earn money that wouldn’t go straight into rent, and bills, and groceries. After this year it’s out into the big wide world and who knows where their paths might take them unless Hokuto makes sure their paths remain together.
He picks up the box, studying the ring inside it carefully again. It’s perfect – six little diamonds laid in a line into the plain white gold band, and in the middle of them, just slightly larger, Taiga’s favourite gemstone – a single sapphire.
It wasn’t cheap. If he hadn’t have taken as much overtime as he’d been offered then he might not have afforded it in time. It will be worth it though. As soon as Taiga sees it he’ll understand..as soon as Taiga answers his phone.
He closes the box with a sigh and places it back on the desk, the unease growing in his stomach as that tiny box observes him dial Taiga’s number for what must be the thirtieth time tonight.
Taiga doesn’t answer, but a few minutes later a message comes through – ‘I think we need to talk’.
The tiny black box is on the floor in the corner of the room, right where it landed when Hokuto threw it sometime after midnight. Taiga was supposed to be there at nine, they were supposed to talk. Hokuto could only guess at what Taiga thought they needed to talk about, but he had a fairly good guess, Taiga hadn’t been answering his calls all day.
Taiga wasn’t there at nine. Taiga still wasn’t there as the clock ticked over into the new day, and he still wasn’t answering his phone.
Hokuto realises it’s his phone ringing that has woken him, but the time reads closer to 5am as he stares down at the unknown number on the screen. The call drops, only for the same number to flash across the screen a moment later and the sound of his phone vibrating against the desk he fell asleep at is strangely ominous.
“Hello?” he says warily as his thumb swipes across the screen and he lifts the phone to his ear.
“Hokuto-kun.” a voice answers shakily, a voice almost recognisable as Taiga’s mother’s. “I’m sorry to call you so early.” she continues, barely there, a slight wobble in her tone. “There’s been an accident.”
