[Team Four] Little Sun
Summary: Taeyong has always taught his son Donghyuck to not have favorites, but maybe, just maybe, Donghyuck and Jaehyun are his favorites.
“Buddy needs someone!”
Taeyong smiles softly down at his son, heart squeezing fondly. “Everybody needs someone?”
Donghyuck nods his head vigorously, black hair flopping everywhere, little hands gesturing wildly. “Yes! Duckie has you and papa has Duckie!”
Taeyong can’t help but laugh, squatting down to pull Donghyuck towards him to press kisses all over his chubby face. Donghyuck squeals, palms slapping against Taeyong’s shoulders as he fights to get away.
“I thought you just said I have you,” Taeyong says with a pout. “Why are you trying to leave me?”
Scrunching his face up, Donghyuck says, quite plainly, “But you have Mister Jaehyun, too.”
The statement causes Taeyong to freeze, face heating up at the mention of Donghyuck’s kindergarten teacher. He’s going to absolutely kill Yuta for all of the times he has mentioned the dates he and Jaehyun have gone on when Donghyuck has been conveniently around to hear about them. He’s sure that Doyoung would help him, he and Yuta have been fighting over who Donghyuck’s favorite uncle is ever since Donghyuck could talk – if Yuta is gone, then Doyoung won’t have any competition.
For now, though, Taeyong pushes aside those thoughts and ignores the increased beating of his heart to say, “But Duckie is my favorite.”
That gets Donghyuck to absolutely beam, looking like the sun Taeyong always likens him to. He throws his arms around Taeyong’s neck, barely missing Taeyong’s face in his haste, placing a sloppy kiss to his cheek and proclaiming that Taeyong is “the absolute bestest papa in the whole wide world!”
Taeyong can only smile, hugging Donghyuck closer to his chest. It’s moments like this that are everything to Taeyong, making every single hardship and sleepless night worth it. Every battle fought, every home visit made, every piece of paper he had to fill out to adopt Donghyuck, it had all been worth it. Having this moment, Donghyuck real and warm and happy in his arms – it makes everything worth it.

Taeyong doesn’t stop thinking about Donghyuck’s comment for the rest of the day or the following day. He only manages to forget about it for a few hours when the pressure of work becomes too high, but it all comes crashing back when he’s rushing to pick Donghyuck up from school, almost always the last parent to arrive because traffic can be an absolute nightmare when he leaves the studio.
He finds Donghyuck where he always finds him after school – sitting at his desk in his classroom, happily giggling at something that the man in front of him is saying. Taeyong’s heart swoops at the sight of the familiar broad back and the somewhat-familiar sight of a head of light pink hair (Taeyong is still getting used to how gorgeous it is, as the change had only happened last week).
“Papa!” Donghyuck yells, his whole face lighting up when he looks up and sees Taeyong.
Taeyong smiles, an automatic reaction to seeing his son. “Hi Duckie, ready to go?”
As Donghyuck packs up, the man who was crouching in front of him slowly stands up, Taeyong barely holding back a pathetic sound when Jaehyun in all his glory turns around and smiles at Taeyong. His worn-out jeans have seen better days and his t-shirt is full of pain splatters, but Taeyong still can’t help but think that Jaehyun looks absolutely stunning.
And it’s just like that that Taeyong remembers his conversation with Donghyuck, flushing all the way down to his toes. Jaehyun either doesn’t notice or is polite enough not to mention anything, but he does come forward and press a lingering kiss to Taeyong’s cheek in greeting. At this point, there’s no way that Jaehyun can’t see his flush, but if anything, Jaehyun is probably used to it with how often he makes Taeyong flustered.
“Hi,” Jaehyun says, still smiling that beautiful smile of his.
“Hi,” Taeyong whispers back, still wondering how Jaehyun has decided that Taeyong of all people is worth all of his love and affection.
“I’ll be coming over at around seven later, if that works with you?” Jaehyun asks, head slightly tilted to the side like a puppy. Taeyong thinks he looks quite like a golden retriever, but Jaehyun never seems to want to agree with him.
That gives Taeyong a little over four hours to do everything he needs to do, and while it seems like a lot of time, Taeyong has had Donghyuck long enough to know that it might barely be enough. At least Yuta is always early when he babysits Donghyuck, claiming that he wants to spend as much time with him as possible. Taeyong thinks that Yuta just wants an excuse to act like a child while playing with Donghyuck and eat Taeyong’s food, but he isn’t going to complain about it, not when he gets free babysitting out of it.
“It should be fine,” Taeyong replies, already mentally calculating how long it’s going to take to get himself together. Going out with Jaehyun is always so nerve-wracking. He always looks like a model, a complete difference from his laid-back vibe when he’s working. Taeyong is just Taeyong, perpetually worn down by producing songs whenever inspiration strikes, usually at odd hours of the morning before the sun rises.
But Donghyuck and Jaehyun bring light into his life, brighter than the sun could ever be.
Jaehyun smiles, opening his mouth to say something, when Donghyuck runs over, backpack bouncing along with him as he yells, “Papa, look what I painted in class today! Mister Jaehyun taught us this is the color green!”
Gasping, Taeyong crouches down to inspect the piece of parchment paper Donghyuck is holding up proudly, with what Taeyong thinks is supposed to be a tree. “It’s beautiful, Duckie!”
Donghyuck puffs his chest out proudly. “I painted it all by myself.”
“My baby is getting so big, painting all by himself,” Taeyong coos, pulling him closer to plant kisses all over his face. Donghyuck bursts into high-pitched peels of laughter, but Taeyong also hears the lower chuckles that can’t belong to anyone else other than Jaehyun. When Taeyong looks up, there’s the softest smile Taeyong has ever seen on Jaehyun’s face, his heart kicking into overdrive knowing that he’s looking at them like that.
Even after all of the dates they’ve been on and all of the time they’ve spent together, Taeyong still sometimes can’t fathom that Jaehyun is real and spending his free time with them. Jaehyun already spends extra time with Donghyuck after school on the days Taeyong can’t make it on time, roped into some meeting or another with the higher-ups and up-and-coming groups he’s producing for and yet – and yet - he still wants to spend more time with him, with them. It’s more than Taeyong could ever ask for, more than Taeyong could ever dream for. It has just been him for so long, and then just him and Donghyuck, and now for there to even be the possibility that Jaehyun could be in the picture for the long-term as well is frankly a little overwhelming, but in a good way.
And that – sharing their life with Jaehyun, having Jaehyun just being there for him, no matter how short or long of a time it may be – is really what makes everything worth it.
