[team three] you felt right

Based on the song of the same name by K.Flay. I wanted to write something based on this for a while and I've been listening to her a lot recently to get into the YYE spirit so what better time than when I get to choose my own words?

As usual, I wanted to write more of this but time has not been on my side! I'm surprised I managed to write something even this long!

“Are you crazy?” Taiga hears from somewhere behind him. “Yeah, you. Black jeans? You didn’t get the memo about it being summer?” Black jeans, that’s him.

He’s undecided if he should be offended by the comment, but when he turns around, the smile he’s greeted with makes it very hard to be. It’s wide and friendly, and completely at odds with the rest of the man’s appearance – the bleached blonde hair, the metal stud below his lip and the facial hair, earrings lining each of his ears and tattoos covering almost every inch of skin visible around the lines of his tank top. There’s beer in his hand too, two bottles, one of which he holds out to Taiga. “Thanks.” Taiga mumbles as he takes it, caught off guard by both the gesture and by the man before him in general.

“You looked lonely.” The man says in explanation. Taiga nods a little, he was. He hasn’t been back to Tokyo in a long time, it’s been months since he even saw his friends and he’s too changed to slip back to where things were with them – that he was even invited to Juri’s birthday barbecue seems half a miracle to him. They’re trying, he knows, but Taiga isn’t the same person he was, not since all that.

He shudders as he sees the face in his mind again, the one he ran away from, but there’s movement in front of him, the man taking back the bottle to pull off the cap with his teeth before holding it back out to Taiga. He’s hit with a sudden thought that maybe this is a bad idea. He doesn’t think...because the guy doesn’t look, but you can never be too sure and he can’t go there right now. Ever.

“I...um...” he stutters, his eyes finding the toes of his boots. “I just got out of something bad so I’m not...”

“Hey.” the guy says quickly, saving Taiga the embarrassment of saying it. “Don’t worry, I’m not trying to hit on you. I have a girl back home.”

A girl, right, Taiga feels even more stupid. He can’t say that though, and yet he feels like he needs to say something, or maybe walk away. He should just go home really only then he’ll just be wallowing. Home, he thinks again, back home, and he latches on to that. “Back home?” he asks. “You’re not from around here?”

“Okinawa, currently.” The man says with that warm smile again, it makes Taiga feel strangely giddy.

“A long way.” Taiga says, for lack of anything else.

“Yeah.” the man agrees but he shrugs and takes a sip of his own beer. “I couldn’t miss my little brother’s 20th though.”

Taiga’s eyes widen a little in surprise as he looks over the man again in light of the new information. “You’re Juri’s brother?”

“Sure am.” he says. “I’m Koki.”

Taiga remembers the name, he was too much older than them to be in school at the same time but Juri talked about him a lot. He’s sure he even met him once though that was a long time ago, Koki definitely didn’t have the tattoos then. “The rapper right?” he tries.

Koki’s smile widens tenfold but he quickly covers it with what Taiga thinks is meant to be a more humble expression. “Will be one day, still waiting on being discovered.”

Taiga laughs a little, the noise almost strange to hear but it makes Koki smile again and Taiga can’t help smiling too. “I’m Taiga.” he says, and for the first time in a long time it feels easy to breathe.

“Nice to meet you.” Koki says, his voice as warm and genuine as his smile and he holds the beer bottle in his hand up again until Taiga takes it back. “I’m starving, let’s go find some of those burgers, yeah?” When Taiga nods, Koki reaches out for his empty hand and Taiga’s heart skips a beat, the roughness of it is strangely soothing, the firmness of his grip feels safe, he doesn’t really know why, but something just feels right.

They talk for hours, Koki sticking by Taiga’s side after that, and it’s everything he needs because he still feels kind of lost, but Koki’s voice is soft and his eyes twinkle when he laughs and Taiga knows it’s too late to go back now. He finds himself saying things he thought that he’d forgot, like how he used to play guitar, and how he used to want to write his own songs, the reason he never did. Koki is nothing but understanding and encouraging. ‘Pain is strength’ Koki tells him. ‘Don’t be afraid to use it, write about it.’ and Taiga laughs, asks if he’s meant to be a rapper or a poet, but he files the words away for later all the same.

And then before he knows it the sun is setting, it feels like it’s betraying him because everyone is leaving and he has to get to his feet to do the same. “Will I see you again?” he has to ask, as Koki walks him across the yard to the back gate, Taiga’s hand warming in his again.

Koki pauses just outside the fence with him, and Taiga notices the scrutiny in his eyes as he scans Taiga’s face, sees the way his Adam’s apple bobs with a heavy swallow before he answers “I’m here until the end of the week” and when Taiga nods he adds. “A bunch of us are driving out to the beach tomorrow...” Something stirring in his eyes as he asks, his voice an edge away from pleading “Come with us?”

Now it’s Taiga’s turn to swallow heavily. “I don’t want to intrude...”

“You won’t be.” Koki says. “Juri is coming so...”

He catches the way Koki’s eyes flick to his lips and he nods his head quickly, his heart skipping another beat. “Ok.” he says, but the word comes out all breath because Koki is leaning in to press their lips together. Everything about it is wrong, but something just feels right.
