[Team Three] lucky seven

I have to say, I really didn't expect to enjoy Koi no Yamai to Yarou-gumi as much as I do, but I find the characters all really endearing, so even though the drama isn't even done yet, I wanted to write about them. This is set during episode 7, around the middle of the episode, so there are spoilers through episode 7 of the drama! The title is a play on Nanase's name, since it's written with the kanji for "seven."

"Ask," Rokutanda says, peering up at Nanase's face from where he sits beside him in the storage room that they've claimed as their hideout, the eight of them, and affectionally dubbed the "yarou-beya." The others are all nowhere to be found at the moment, perhaps having already headed home for the day, or off to karaoke or the arcade, but Nanase had only just finished with soccer practice, and Rokutanda... well, he'd been able to tell that Nanase had something on his mind, and so he'd stuck around, as well.

And sure enough, Nanase was still preoccupied with the idea of the "group date" that they'd suddenly been invited to, and it hadn't taken too much to get him to open up and admit the problem-- after all, they were closer than the others (or at least, Rokutanda liked to think so), having known one another for longer. And besides, Nanase might be closest friends with Ichijou these days, but he's not exactly one to listen to the feelings of others, or even notice, for that matter. But Rokutanda noticed, Rokutanda prided himself in noticing everything about Nanase (and everyone he cared about... but especially Nanase), and so when he'd pulled him aside and asked what was on his mind, he'd been happy to follow when Nanase suggested that they go back inside, and happy to listen when Nanase finally admitted that he didn't understand why his ex-girlfriend had asked him on this date in the first place.

Rokutanda knows that he's far from any sort of genius when it comes to dating advice or girls in general, but he does consider himself at least a little (more than a little) better than the rest of their group of friends, and so, "Why not just ask?" he suggests, looking up at Nanase with a hesitant smile.

"You know that I can't," Nanase says with a frown, his expression a mix of embarrassment and frustration, and Rokutanda presses his lips together as well, letting out a small sigh to have elicited such a reaction. It's true; he knows that Nanase can't, just as much as he can't (for now), just as much as all of them can't-- that's part of the whole problem. But while he can't do anything about their mutual affliction, he's resolved to help, and he knows that he can't just leave Nanase feeling so down, and so he tries again.

"No, but I mean, you don't have to talk face to face. Can't you text her? Futa-chan was texting with girls just fine, right?" he asks gently, trying to show through his tone of voice that he's not judging Nanase, and he doesn't want Nanase to judge himself, either. While the most down to earth and matter-of-fact member of their group of friends, Nanase does at times tend to get inwardly critical and frustrated, Rokutanda knows, and the goal here is to make him feel better, not worse.

Nanase meets his eyes for a moment with an appreciative half-smile that makes Rokutanda's heart leap in his chest perhaps a little more than it should (but he's not thinking about it, because every time he does, he remembers how Nanase looked with milk coming out of his nose and has nightmares for days...), but then shifts his weight to lean back against the wall and look up at the ceiling. "I mean... What would I even say, 'hey, we already broke up so why are you asking me out again?' Isn't that just a little bit tactless? Even if I could talk to her, there's no way I could say something like that..."

Rokutanda bites his lip, looking down at his lap as he nods a little in acknowledgement. It's a difficult situation, but truth be told, he really could care less about the feelings of Nanase's ex-girlfriend-- if she wasn't good enough for Nanase, that's all that Rokutanda needs to know. But he is invested in making Nanase feel better, and he especially hates seeing him be so hard on himself, so he supposes, if he has to take the ex-girlfriend's feelings into account, then he will.

"Then... why not just wait and see how it goes?" he offers hesitantly, looking up again with what he hopes is an encouraging smile. "I mean... maybe it'll be really awkward, but... then you'll just know that you made the right choice breaking up, right? It's just a picnic, not like you're moving in with her."

At that, Nanase turns to look at him for a moment before laughing a little, sitting up again with a hint of a smile, and it's expressions like that that make Rokutanda almost (almost) feel like he can forget the whole milk incident after all. "You're right," he agrees at length, his smile growing a little, his eyes warm, "Thanks, Roku-chan. I know I can always count on you."

There's something about Nanase that's so different than all the others, different than anyone Rokutanda has ever met in his entire life, for that matter, and probably different than anyone on the globe. He can't put his finger on what it is, but when he sees that expression, those eyes looking only at him, he knows, completely independent of any desire to make Nanase feel better, that whoever Nanase chooses to spend his time with will be an incredibly lucky individual.

And so, "It's nothing," he replies with an easy smile, because he likes to think being encouraging is one of the things he does best. But it takes no effort or skill whatsoever to say the honest truth when he adds, "But she was lucky to have you."

Nanase immediately turns a little red and shoves him, laughing embarrassedly and saying, "What are you talking about, shut up~" but Rokutanda knows he won't, he can't take it back, not even jokingly. And so laughs a little, but looks up to meet Nanase's eyes when he says, "I mean it, though. So no matter what, even if this date is really awkward... you'll be fine."

And Nanase looks like he wants to argue at first, but after a moment, he smiles instead, shoving his hands into his pockets and nodding. A few minutes pass in not-uncomfortable silence before, at length, Nanase adds, "Well, that's that then. Since everyone else left us behind, how about McDonald's on the way home?"

And it's Rokutanda's turn to smile genuinely as he nods, because at times like these, more complicated thoughts aside, he knows that he, too, is lucky.
