[Team Four] Colored Black and White
Summary: They have a new tattoo artist arriving today, and even though Kihyun has looked him up beforehand, a picture is nothing in comparison to Hoseok’s beauty. Raising a sweater-covered hand to hide his bright laughter, the top of a small, pink heart tattoo peeking over the fabric on Hoseok’s index finger, Kihyun is absolutely, incredibly endeared.

“-right about now, but once he’s done, you can meet him.”
Kihyun’s eyes barely flicker away from the shading he’s finishing up, coming upon the last stretch in the seven hours he’s been working on this piece, but his ears have always been sharp. Kihyun has always prided himself on his hearing because sometimes it doesn’t take much for clients to cross from small whimpering into full-on sobbing at the pain, so at any hint of a whimper from his clients, he makes sure to take a break and get them water. Sure, sometimes appointments end up a lot longer than intended due to these breaks, but Kihyun is more than confident in his abilities and his schedule, filled to the brim for the next four months, is proof enough that people come back again and again. He may not look like the most personable person at first glance, given his piercings and tattoos, but there’s nothing he takes more seriously than customer service. Nothing except his tattoos, of course.
It’s only a few more minutes until the tattoo is done and wrapped up, Kihyun leaning back with a satisfied grin at another beautiful piece finished. Changkyun has been harassing him about finding room in his packed schedule to do something on his back right under his neck for months now, and even though Changkyun works at the front desk and could easily have moved things around for his benefit, he’s not nearly as bratty when it comes to work. There are many lines Changkyun would cross on a daily basis to get his way, but he knows to never mess with Kihyun’s work.
“Finally, I swear I was starting to cramp up.”
But just because Changkyun is serious about work, doesn’t mean he won’t stop whining about everything else at any given second.
Rolling his eyes, Kihyun slides his gloves off and tosses them into the trash. “Make yourself useful and help me clean up at least.”
Changkyun groans in what is probably the most exaggerated manner Kihyun has ever heard from him. “Really? I’ve just had a needle stabbing my skin for seven hours and you’re going to make me do physical labor? I knew I should’ve asked Hyunwoo to do my piece.”
At that, Kihyun actually laughs. “Yeah? Then why did you cry at me almost every single day, begging me to make this piece just for you? What did you say again?” Kihyun wonders, tapping his chin and ignoring Changkyun’s poor attempts at keeping him quiet. “’You’re the only one who can do this piece exactly the way I want, please Kihyun, please.’”
“First of all,” Changkyun sniffs, picking up napkins and other stray towels despite his protesting, “I don’t sound like that. Second of all, I beg better than that.”
Kihyun sighs. “I suppose the second point is true, at least.”
Changkyun sends him the biggest shit-eating grin, but Kihyun only rolls his eyes once more and starts to clean up. It’s oddly relaxing, sterilizing his equipment and putting everything back where it belongs.
The both of them walk out a few minutes later, everything put back into place and spotless, Changkyun regaling him with another tale of the game he has been into recently. Kihyun loves Changkyun, he really does, but intricate pieces always tire him out, and he can’t honestly say he’s paying that much attention to Changkyun.
He almost forgets about the people who had passed by his station earlier – almost, because Kihyun walks right into something on the way to the break room. Stumbling back, Kihyun blinks up at what he just ran into – or more like who he just ran into, only to find a very familiar face staring back at him. They’ve never met, but ever since Kihyun told Minhyuk that they would be getting a new tattoo artist, Minhyuk hasn’t shut up about how cute the newcomer is from the pictures he found on Instagram. And Minhyuk finding those pictures means that Kihyun found those pictures by virtue of Minhyuk shoving his phone into Kihyun’s face every few seconds with a coo.
Standing right before him is a man in a soft white sweater that matches the white of his hair, teeth equally as bright as he smiles sheepishly. Kihyun barely has half a second to think that the man looks like an absolute angel in person, before the angel is speaking.
“I’m sorry about that, I didn’t mean to stand in the way.”
Now Kihyun is many things, but he is not a liar, not even to himself. And so he finds it completely justified that he’s struck dumb by how beautiful this man is – no picture could ever do him justice, not even if Kihyun were the photographer. He has the cutest ears that Kihyun has ever seen in his life, soft cheeks that he wants to squish, and eyes that sparkle like the cluster of stars Kihyun has tattooed on his wrist.
Internally, Kihyun is screaming. Outwardly, though, he only smiles and says, “No, don’t apologize, I wasn’t looking where I was going. I’m Kihyun. You must be Hoseok, Hyunwoo said that you would be starting today.”
The man absolutely lights up, beaming with every molecule in his body. “Yes! That’s me, it’s nice to meet you. Actually,” he says, cheeks turning a little pink as he rubs his arm. “I’m a really big fan of yours, your work is absolutely gorgeous.”
To say Kihyun is surprised would be an understatement, but at the same time, Kihyun is more than a little confident and so he knows that he’s good. But knowing that he’s good and hearing it so sincerely from someone who doesn’t even know him, who is a fellow artist himself, is nice. More than nice, really.
Kihyun smiles, the small, genuine one that doesn’t see the light of day as often as it probably should. “Thank you. Your work is really cute, but also really clean, it’s pretty impressive.”
Even if Minhyuk hadn’t all but shoved his phone in Kihyun’s face every second of the day while researching (also known as going through every single photo of Hoseok as a person on his personal account and Hoseok as an artist on his professional account), Kihyun would’ve looked him up himself. It’s only common curiosity that would’ve led him to Hoseok’s page, and while Kihyun isn’t the most fond of colored pieces, as he himself only does strictly black and white, he can still appreciate the artistry that goes into each and every one of Hoseok’s designs. Because while Kihyun’s ego can be unironically, abnormally large at times, Kihyun isn’t so far up in his own ego that he really, truly believes that he’s the best of the best. He may be good, but there is always something to learn. He doesn’t quite know yet what he can learn from Hoseok and his seemingly signature small, colored pieces, but he’s more than a little intrigued.
The prettiest blush settles itself onto Hoseok’s delicate cheeks, and Kihyun can’t help but spare a quick thought that maybe he can learn something from Hoseok the person and not Hoseok the artist.
Changkyun chooses that moment to loudly clear his throat, Hoseok nearly jumping a foot in the air.. Kihyun can’t help but roll his eyes, absolutely not surprised that Changkyun would ruin the mood with such ease.
“You’ll get used to it soon enough,” he tells Hoseok, knowing that it will annoy Changkyun more that he has been ignored. “Changkyun can be really needy sometimes when he isn’t the center of attention.”
To his credit, Changkyun doesn’t even deny it. He only smiles at Hoseok, looking like a pleased cat about ready to settle down for a nap. Kihyun doesn’t blame him – intricate pieces tire him out, but there’s no doubt that Changkyun must be exhausted as well.
Hoseok laughs at that, a cute guffaw that seems to slip past his lips without thought. It’s a happy sound, a warmth lighting up Kihyun’s insides, and he can feel his lips curling up into a smile in response.
When Kihyun had first seen Hoseok via his Instagram posts, he admittedly thought Hoseok was cute, but wasn’t quite able to pinpoint a style that he thought Hoseok would fit. It was only after looking up his work that it started to make sense, but now, seeing Hoseok raise a sweater-covered hand to hide his bright laughter, the top of a small pink heart tattoo peeking over the fabric on his index finger, does Kihyun think he’s starting to understand.
Kihyun has never been good at lying, not even to himself, which is why he finds it easy to admit that he’s more than a little intrigued by Hoseok. He isn’t one to get excited about most things, but he has a good feeling about this one.
It's your turn,
