[Team Three] Characterization

Someone mentioned Kuromyu recently, so here's some butai RPF based on the Most Beautiful Death rerun.

Easier was a dangerous word. Easier how? Easier to keep running at the wall no matter how many times it stopped him, or easier to cut his losses and move on and accept the empty hole inside him? Nothing was ever easy. At least, not in his life.

"So, would you do it?" Rachi asked. They were leaning against the wall in the rehearsal space waiting for another run through to start.

"Huh?"

"Whose side do you come down on, Alan's or Eric's?"

Masa shrugged. "Who do you think? I'm only playing on of them."

"You don't have to agree with your character. Isn't that half the fun sometimes? Playing around with personalities that aren't yours at all. Acting's great!"

Masa thought about Alan, the vulnerable one, the one who wore his heart on his sleeve. He'd struggled with the character since day one. Alan scared him. It made getting into character an ongoing battle, and if the frequent feedback from the director was any indication, one he was losing.

"Anyway, I don't think I could ever be Eric," Rachi continued. "I don't care as deeply as he does. Can't think of anything I'd go as far as him to try to save. Hope I wouldn't be so single-minded as him either."

It's enough to make Masa's blood boil. What would it be like not to care? To be the spoiled prince who could just walk away and pretend it never happened?

"Places," the director called, cutting Masa off before he could respond.

Places couldn't cut off the frustration though. He carried it with him through the entire run. Alan was sharper than usual, lashing out at Eric every time he got too close. He pushed Eric away, turning toward what he wanted and resenting Eric for keeping it from him. At the end of the run through, he waited for the criticism from the director.

It never came.

"That's it, Nakagauchi-san! Keep running with that characterization. It's working for you."

Go figure. The more he tried to run away, the more everything inevitably circled back to him.
