[Team Two]: Mission Debrief

My turn! This is a future scene for one of my current fics, a crossover between Katekyo Hitman Reborn! and Harry Potter. This scene is about the Arcobaleno some time before they are chibified :O

The festive decorations are a little too much, Renato thinks to himself as he enters the little café they’ve been using as mission headquarters. There are tiny fairy lights twinkling merrily over the whole ceiling and dropping randomly over some tables, and he eyes them carefully as he makes his way towards their designed private room. He’s tall, yes, but at least not tall enough that the stupid lights would bother him, and that’s all he cares about. Then, there’s the mistletoe hanging over every door, and the over-abundance of green, red and gold. And the cheery seasonal songs. Renato is in hell, but he can’t help the soft snort of amusement as he thinks that Harry would definitely love this ambiance.

He tilts down his fedora to the barkeep and the woman nods back at him, eyes sharp behind a front of cheerful obliviousness. Renato is pretty sure she’s part of the Giglio Nero, under Luce’s command—why would they use a café for their meetings if it wasn’t secure in some way?—but he hasn’t asked the woman yet, and probably never will.

As expected, he’s the first to arrive to the meeting place. He scans the room, still careful even though he’s been in here many times already, and once he’s confirmed everything is still in order, he disappears into the shadows of a corner to wait for the others to arrive. It always amuses him greatly to see whether he can startle any of them with his sudden appearing out of nowhere, but it’s starting to have no effect on most of the other elements. Lal’s never fallen for it after the first time, as is expected of a woman with her training. Luce, with her visions, has never been caught unawares either. The others, however… well, he’s never been too sure about Fon, as the man is so calm he barely shows any kind of emotion, but he’s startled Verde a good number of times, even if the scientist is good at covering it up, and Skull always jumps out of his skin. He’s pretty sure he startled Viper at least twice, but Mists are dangerous and Renato doesn’t want to tempt fate by pointing that out. Or being charged through his nose because he offended them.

He sighs as he waits, frowning as he thinks about how he’d rather be off-mission right now. He still hasn’t bought a proper house, since he hasn’t really had any time between missions. Renato is pretty sure this is Luce’s way of saying she didn’t appreciate the month he took off without any particular warning back in August, but he’s not about to apologize for it. Not when it was one of the best decisions he’s ever made. At least Harry seems to be happy to stay the winter holidays at school, though Renato is not stupid—he knows there’s something going on, but as Harry seems to have things under control for now, he’ll trust him to keep his head above water and resolve whatever it is by himself. He knows that if he really needs him, Harry will ask him for help.

So, for now, Renato will focus on whatever this new mission is, and stop worrying.

Luce enters the room then, and flashes a friendly smile towards Renato’s shadowy corner. She’s humming a cheery tune Renato’s pretty sure is the same song the main part of the café is torturing its clients with, and she has brought more cookies with her that she promptly places on the table before sitting down and attentively looking at the door. Her focus is almost eerie.

The door opens again barely a moment after she sits, and in come Lal and Verde. Lal looks around with a wary stance, and narrows her eyes approximately at the point where Renato’s standing. Renato can’t help the tiny smile. For his part, Verde is completely immersed in whatever new trinket he’s developing, muttering under his breath as he scribbles frantically over a notepad. He sits next to Luce and vaguely hums a greeting before taking a cookie and chomping half of it off. Lal looks at him with pointed disgust, and then rolls her eyes when he doesn’t even twitch.

“Luce,” she says gruffly, then eyes Renato’s corner. “Reborn.”

“Good evening, Lal,” Luce says affably. “The others are arriving. Fon’s not coming today, he’s busy with other things.”

“Right.”

“I’M HERE!” Skull’s grating voice calls as he throws the door open with a bang. “EARLY! HA, TAKE THAT, REBORN!”

“You’re two minutes late, Lackey,” Reborn-the-hitman says, coming out of the shadows and leaving Renato behind. He smirks smugly when the boy screams in a mix of rage and fright.

“Why are you always like this,” Lal complains from her spot on the table, massaging her temples. Reborn chuckles and takes a seat, too.

“If you waste my time,” Viper says, appearing out of nowhere and making Skull scream once again, “it’ll cost you. With interest.”

“We know, Viper,” Luce says kindly. “Now that we’re all here, we can begin.”

I, admittedly, don’t know anything about Katekyo Hitman Reborn! except being familiar with the name, but crossovers are awesome and this sounds very thrilling!
