[Team one] first day
Pay no attention to me as I randomly write a missing scene from a recent NCISLA episode
"Feeling okay?" Deeks asks, clapping Devin's shoulder in an attempt to be reassuring.
Devin is currently sitting in the driver's seat of an abandoned car right on top of a bomb, so he's not quite sure how to answer. "Uh..."
"Good. That's better than bad," Deeks replies, taking a step back to see if the bomb squad has arrived yet. "Wouldn't want you to throw up or anything. That'd be a mess for everyone."
Devin hasn't really had a chance to get to know Detective Deeks yet -- it's only been a few hours so far since he reported for work this morning -- but he feels pretty certain the jokes are Deeks' way of coping.
He had warned Devin after all not to sit down, but perhaps he feels guilty for not doing it fast enough.
"No worries, I'm just gonna... sit here," Devin says, and he's not sure now if he's reassuring Deeks, himself, or both.
"These kinds of things happen all the time," Deeks continues. "Just a few months ago, I was surfing behind the back of a car as the building exploded around me. Almost lost both my eyebrows. But we made it out." He fidgets like he wants to start pacing, and then adds, "nobody will be losing their eyebrows today though. I promise."
"...okay," Devin really can't keep up, but at least Deeks is a distraction from the feeling of impending doom that's creeping up on him.
"I remember one time a few years ago, Callen and Sam got trapped in a submarine filling up with water," the detective continues rambling. "They were fine in the end though. And then there was the time we had to rescue Hetty from Vietnam. There was, if I remember correctly, a tiger involved somewhere along the way."
Deeks actually is pacing now, seemingly lost in his own thoughts.
"One of the worst things was when Kensi basically had a helicopter dropped on her. Needed a bunch of physical therapy after for a while, but she's back on track now. You'd never know it just from watching her work today."
"That's all very reassuring," Devin says, though he's thinking more along the lines of what kind of craziness have I gotten into?
Then again, he considers, is it any less crazy than a few weeks ago when dirty FBI agents were trying to kill him?
"Sam is the best guy I know when it comes to bombs. You're gonna be fine," Deeks declares. The bomb squad guys have finally arrived and he starts waving them over.
"I can't believe this is just my first day," Devin says.
Deeks chuckles a little to lighten the mood as much as he can while someone is sitting on a bomb. "I suppose if this doesn't scare you away, nothing will."
