[team four] highgarden
i'm still in my GoT feels it seems. the same AU as last time, only this one is set couple of years earlier.
“The games of the realm are something you must understand and partake in from time to time, if you wish to fend among all these kingdoms, Chanyeol. Sometimes, it means making a month-long journey only to visit another ruler and participate in their tournament.”
His mother’s eyes were stern and Chanyeol swallowed all other complaints he may have had in his mind. Sullenly, he turned to look out of the window of the carriage they were traveling in. He had dared to let it slip how tired he was to be on the road for three weeks; it was a long way from Storm’s End to Highgarden.
“I know that,” he said eventually. “I’m sorry. This endless journey is making me frustrated.”
His mother’s face softened. “It’s taking a toll on us all, believe me. But we’re almost there. And it’ll be worth it in the end as this is a great opportunity to reinforce old alliances and maybe form new ones, for you as well. The Tyrells have a son and daughter around your age. And I’ve heard that lady Seulgi has grown up to be quite a beauty.”
Her mother’s tone on the last sentence made Chanyeol shoot a questioning glance at her, and the way she was smiling knowingly didn’t sit well with him. This wasn’t the first time his parents were trying to introduce him to potential wife candidates. Very often it turned out awkward for him since he was yet to take any sincere liking to any of them. He didn’t see why this time would be any different but didn’t have the energy to argue about it right then, so he just let his mother’s comment slide. He leaned his head against the window sash.
Despite everything, under all his frustration and boredom, Chanyeol was actually excited to be able to visit the Reach and its magnificent capital for the first time. The lands around them were already so different from what Chanyeol was used to back in Stormlands, with the rocky coast and mountains and the constant rumble of the sea. In the Reach, there were hills and slopes looming in the south, bright rivers streaming along and across the Roseroad, and everywhere Chanyeol looked, greenness and lush farmlands for as far as eye could see. It was very beautiful. And eventually, after couple more days of traveling, among all the greenery, Chanyeol could see high white towers rising in the horizon.
Highgarden was like a shining white jewel in the middle of golden fields, and when they finally reached the castle, Chanyeol could only admire its high walls, beautiful buildings and all the gardens. The air was warm and a faint sweet scent of flowers seemed to float everywhere.
Right upon their arrival, Chanyeol and his parents were taken to the main castle to meet the Tyrells, the house that ruled the capital. Chanyeol had never properly met the Lord and Lady of Highgarden before and – remembering his mother’s comment about their daughter – he found himself rather nervous. Turned out there was no need for that; the Tyrells seemed like warm and friendly people.
“Your journey has been long, and we’re very grateful to have you as our guests,” Lord Tyrell smiled and nodded his head at Chanyeol’s parents and then turned to look at him. “Last time I saw this young lord, he was as tall as my knee, I’m sure. It’s been long and you’ve become a fine young man.”
Chanyeol bowed, half pleased, half embarrassed.
Lord Tyrell gestured towards the girl on his right, who looked some years younger than Chanyeol. Chanyeol tried to gulp, as his throat was very dry at the moment.
“Let me introduce our daughter, Seulgi. She was very excited when she heard the lords and knights of other kingdoms would be coming to visit. And as for our son... he’s not present right now, unfortunately. Probably riding on the field outside, getting ready for the tournament tomorrow.”
Chanyeol met eyes with Seulgi and gave her a small smile. The girl quickly averted her gaze, her cheeks red. She was very pretty, but in a cute, little sister kind of way. Chanyeol wondered if her parents were on board with this possible set up or not. He didn’t know if he even wanted to find out.
After they’d exchanged all the greetings and courtesies, the Tyrells wished them to make themselves at home and the servants started showing their group to their rooms. Chanyeol excused himself then, asking a permission to walk in the castle’s gardens, to reload after the journey and to just be by himself for a moment. He was eager to look around the beautiful place in peace and also escape from his scheming parents and all the possible bride candidates.
Everyone always talked about the magnificent gardens and roses of Highgarden, even Chanyeol remembered reading about them, but all the talks and tales really didn’t do justice for the real thing. The garden he entered was huge, full of flower beds, shining grass, blooming trees and little ponds and rivers. Butterflies and bees were flying around the plants and he even saw couple of peacocks calmly pacing across the grass fields. The cobbled pathways swirled between different colorful plantings, sometimes disappearing into green tunnels of vines, sometimes leading to delicate pagodas in which one could sit down and rest and maybe have a drink.
Chanyeol was walking aimlessly around the garden, trying to take in all the colors and scents and marveling at the beauty. And he wasn’t alone; the garden was actually full of people from the castle: mostly the noble folk but also a few gardeners and servants hurrying about in their businesses.
Chanyeol didn’t really care for the bustle and tried to navigate to a calmer corner of the garden, taking turns away from what seemed to be the main pathways. He walked towards the castle wall, down couple of stone steps and through archways in the thin walls separating different parts of the garden from each other. Finally, when he felt like he was far enough from everyone else, Chanyeol halted for a moment by an emerald green carp pond with huge white water lilies. This scenery, too, looked like a vivid painting. In Chanyeol’s mind, it was exactly the kind of spot where a hero of a story meets his lover in secret and they walk hand in hand among the roses. He was sure he’d heard the kind of story as a kid.
He was pulled away from his thoughts by the noise of hurried steps, and he actually flinched a little when a young man suddenly appeared from behind the wall. He took couple of strides more before he spotted Chanyeol and stopped on his tracks. He looked like he hadn’t been expecting to run into someone in this part of the garden.
The surprised and rather awkward silence stretched on for couple of seconds. Chanyeol quickly scanned the stranger from head to toe; he had ashy brown hair and delicate features and was wearing a simple dark tunic with riding pants and boots. No sigils or coats of arms in sight. The other clearly did a similar once-over for Chanyeol and eventually gave him a friendly smile.
“Seems like I’m not the only one trying to get away from all the people.”
Chanyeol chuckled. “I found this spot by accident.”
“This is a good one,” the stranger nodded. “There are others, too, but they’re secret for a reason. One just has to wander around enough to find them. But my apologies, I won’t bother you any longer. Enjoy the gardens, my lord.”
He bowed lightly and walked past Chanyeol and along the narrow path by the pond, disappearing behind the trees. Chanyeol was left wondering about the stranger, as well as the secret corners of the garden, until he finally decided to head back to the castle.
That evening, they all had a welcome feast in the main hall. Their group from Stormlands wasn’t the only guest, there were also other houses from around the kingdoms, and the mood was very merry and festive. Chanyeol sat with his parents in the main table with the Tyrells and heads of other houses that were present. Chanyeol sat down and saw Seulgi across him on the other side of the table. Again, the girl shyly averted her gaze as soon as she noticed Chanyeol. Well. Almost better that way, Chanyeol thought to himself. Then his eyes shifted from Seulgi to the man sitting next to her. Chanyeol blinked.
It was the young man from the gardens. Now he was wearing a golden and green embroidered shirt with Tyrell’s rose sigil on the chest and talking animatedly with lady Tyrell sitting next to him. So he was the missing son from earlier. Chanyeol was suddenly very self-conscious about the earlier meeting and wondered what the other possibly had thought of him. Like feeling he was being watched, the man across the table turned his head and locked eyes with Chanyeol. His eyes were very bright and pretty. He smiled slightly and raised his goblet as if for a toast. Chanyeol raised his as a greeting. It was stupid and unexplainable, but suddenly his face felt hot and there was this weird tingle in his stomach.
And Chanyeol would come to notice that the tingle would be there the whole time they stayed in Highgarden. He would also come to notice that he wasn’t meant to take part in tournaments and joust, as proven when he’d ride against ser Baekhyun of House Tyrell and be swept off from horseback after mere seconds.
And maybe the most surprisingly, after falling from his horse and looking up at Baekhyun who would ride up to check on him, he would come to notice that he’d fallen for the soft featured knight with pretty eyes and smile like he'd never fallen for anyone before.
luciferxdamien, you're up!

no subject
I SEE, this is how they met for the first time. poor chanyeol and his parents trying to talk him into a marriage, he clearly hasn't met that right one! and him thinking that seulgi is more like his little sister. :')
WHAT A PRETTY WAY of describing that garden place! you've clearly once again become even better with writing, i can see the improvement because i could clearly imagine that place. AND YES, a place where one could potentially meet their secret lover. 8))))
and then he meets someone, I WONDER WHO'S THAT STRANGER!!!! aaahhhh so romantic, my heart kept fluttering even though it was such a short encounter. can't help it. ;;; i'm such a sucker for these romantic historical/kinda-historical AUs.
and then the ending. THE ENDING. when chanyeol spotted Him (oh it's bbh, i had no clue!! :D) during the feast and gets that feeling in his stomach. oh baby, you're so in love already, admit it!
but... they're going to fight against each other during a tournament?? sorry, i'm laughing a bit at the thought of pcy being swept off from horse; i wonder if he has this I-Must-Win-And-Be-The-Best character in this au like irl. XD and THEN HE FUCKING FALLS IN LOVE, OFC HE DOES, BBH IS SO HANDSOME and caring. ;;;____;;;; and then they'll eventually kiss and do all the romantic stuff ahhhh. but at the same time i'm afraid this won't have a happy ending. i know almost nothing about got but i kinda figured out that everyone dies and no-one gets their happy ending. :((( please don't kill them or separate them! i want them to be happy together forever.
i wonder how long is this whole fic going to be? anyway, i hope you'll be able to finish the whole story and i can come back to these bits when it's completely ready. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, you have a passionate reader and a fan here waiting for updates!
