[Team Three] Invitation

Hello Team Three, and welcome to the new round! There shouldn't be any major changes compared to previous rounds, but we are asking that any fandom/pairing/rating/length tags come before the cut tag instead of part of it as many of us have done in the past. That way the information will be picked up correctly by RSS feeds.

Most of our team, with one exception, will be posting here on Livejournal. I'll put a placeholder post here with a link for any posts for our team made on Dreamwidth. If anyone needs to reach me, the best options are Twitter and Discord (@yrindor on both), but you can also reach me via Dreamwidth DM (also Yrindor) or by e-mail at the same name @gmail.com.

I think that covers all of the administrative details, so without further ado, let's shiritori!

I'm starting off with some sports anime fic for a favorite AU in which Yowamushi Pedal's Kinjou is the son of Prince of Tennis's Inui and Kaidou. Inspired in part by Star Trek TNG s02e14 "The Icarus Factor". 900 words, G.

"Father! Could you sign a permission form for me? We have to return them by the end of the week."

Kaidou looks up from his magazine. "For what?"

Kinjou shifts awkwardly in the doorway. "Prom. It's not until next month, and it's on a Friday, so it won't interfere with schoolwork, and Makishima already asked if I'd go with him."

"Prom!?" Kaidou coughs, and for once it's not Inui's smoothie attempts to blame. "Already?"

"It's nearly the end of the school year, Father. There are only another three weeks of classes."

"Not this year. This....Now--" Kaidou waves his hand, trying to articulate the whole concept. Hadn't they just sent Shingo off to kindergarten for the first time? Celebrated his graduation to middle school? When had he gotten so big?

Kaidou stands abruptly. "I'll be in the gym," he mutters. He needs a minute to think. Clear his head.

"Can you--" Kinjou begins before Kaidou brushes past him and escapes down the hall. Ten minutes. Ten minutes to get his head back on straight before he comes back and deals with...whatever this is.

The gym looks the same as it did when he left half an hour ago. It always looks the same. It's comforting. He pulls on a pair of gloves and lays into the heavy bag.

He's just getting into the rhythm when Kinjou walks into his field of view. He's changed into his workout gear too, and he's grabbed the sparring gear from the rack. "Up for a round?" Kinjou asks as he tosses one set to Kaidou.

Not the same as the laying into a bag as hard and fast as he can, but it's hard to say no to Shingo. He trades out his boxing gloves for the lighter grappling pair and pulls on his headgear over his bandanna. They face each other from across the mat. Standing, they're almost eye-to-eye.

He remembers the days when he fought from his knees and still towered over Shingo. Or the earliest days before Shingo had even mastered walking, and they started on the ground.

He doesn't have long to reminisce as Shingo comes in high. He reads the fake just in time and jumps back out of the way of Shingo's sweeping foot.

He counters while Shingo is still recovering. Once, that would have been enough to the end the match. Now, Shingo knows better than to overcommit.

They both pull back. The tension builds as they circle, looking for an opening.

Kaidou moves first this time, dropping low as he aims for Kinjou's legs.

Kinjou sprawls back. His timing has improved; Kaidou barely manages to regain his balance in time. There's a flurry of movement as they both try to shift the balance in their favor, but in the end, they break away to circle again.

The pause is shorter this time. They're both getting impatient with the stalemate. They move at the same time, trusting to instinct more than thought as they battle for the upper hand. Kinjou shifts in for a throw, and Kaidou feels his opening. He counters and brings Kinjou to the ground. There was a time when he could have ended the round easily from there, but now Shingo twists as he falls and pulls Kaidou into his guard.

The back and forth from there is almost as meditative as the heavy bag--the push and pull of distance, the opening and closing of the guard. Kinjou hooks a leg across Kaidou's neck, trying to sweep him over into an arm lock.

Kaidou ducks low and goes for the choke. From there, he'll pass into a side guard, and if he's lucky, end the round.

He doesn't get that far. Shingo surprises him by pulling his arm closer. By the time he realizes what's happening, it's too late, and Shingo's legs are already closing around his neck. He overextended himself, and now he's too off balance to manage a counter. He tries every desperate trick he knows, but Shingo has him too securely in his hold.

He taps out.

They pull apart, turning to bow before they collapse on the mat to catch their breath.

"Good triangle," Kaidou says once he has breath to spare. "Don't think I've seen you use that before."

"I've been practicing. Plus, I had a good teacher. I asked Dad to explain the physics too after last time you pulled it out. It's not a substitute for feeling it, but it is easier to figure out some of the angles when they're not happening around your neck."

"You're growing up. Didn't used to be so hard just to hold my own. Eventually, you'll have learned everything I know."

"There'll always be something more I can learn from you, Father," Kinjou says. "I promise."

Kaidou clears his throat. "Anyway. Prom. You want to go?"

"Yeah. Makishima and I were thinking of riding our bikes there."

"Tell him to come here first. Your dad will want pictures."

"So I can go?" Kinjou asks. He's already grinning as he says it. It's the same smile he's had for seventeen years, and it means no less to Kaidou now than it did the very first time he saw it.

Ignoring the sweat, Kaidou pulls Kinjou into an awkward one-armed hug. "Of course. You make us proud."

You're up, [livejournal.com profile] kira_shadow!
