[Team 1] Almost There
Hi! I hope I'm posting this right! :D
KH fandom: Sora, Princess and the Frong Characters, PG (probably more G), 1090 Words
Of all the things he wanted to learn, that one was certainly first on the list. Beignets just sounded amazing!
“Oh just wait till you meet, Tia,” Charlotte said as she dragged Sora by the arm down to a restaurant she called Tiana’s Place. “She’s the most amazing baker and chef this side of the Mississippi.”
Sora chuckled, nearly having to run to keep up with Charlotte’s excited stride. “Yeah? So she’s the chef too?”
“Of course! She makes this Gumbo that we have to have for Big Daddy’s birthday every year. Oh! And the cornbread! And the— Oh! There it is now!”
Sora looked ahead at the restaurant facade. It was vastly different than Little Chef’s back in twilight town, bigger and with two smokestacks to either side, though they appeared to be used just for decoration. It also appeared the restaurant wasn’t open yet, but Sora supposed that made sense as it was still mid-morning.
Charlotte ushered him inside. “Naveen! Oh, Naveen!”
“Ahh, are those the dulcet tones of Ms. Charlotte La Bouff?”
A man stuck his head around a corner, the easy grin on his face reminding Sora a bit of Lea.
“Yes, it is!” Charlotte grinned, waving. “And I made a new friend! Naveen, this is Sora! He saved me from some of those lingering shadow men hanging around.”
“Heartless,” Sora corrected with a laugh, then turned to Naveen. “Hi! It’s nice to meet you!”
“And it is nice to meet you as well!” Naveen’s grin widened. “It’s rare these days to find someone who can successfully scare off those creatures.”
“Just, uh, doing my job.” Sora grinned, trying to keep in mind the ‘World Order’ Donald always squawked about. It was more difficult when he and Goofy weren’t here.
“Naveen, where’s Tia?”
“Right, here Lottie,” Another voice called out.
A young woman stepped into the dining area, cleaning her hands on her apron before holding one out to Sora. “Hello, my name’s Tiana.”
“Sora!” He cheerfully shook her hand. “So… Miss Charlotte was telling me about these, uh, ‘man-catching’ beignets?”
Tiana laughed, “Lottie, you been telling stories again?”
“They’re not stories if they’re true!” Lottie laughed. “Besides, Sora here— well, you tell her Sora—”
“Uhh, I—”
“Sora’s having trouble asking his crush out and, oh Sora tell her the other thing—”
“Um, well, Riku—”
“Apparently, his crush, Riku? Has a bit of a sweet tooth so I—”
“Ms. Charlotte,” Naveen gently interrupted. “Can you help me arrange the tables? We have two large parties coming right at opening and I’m afraid it’s the Joneses and the Smiths again.”
“Again? Naveen you can’t let them sit together, you remember what happened last time…” Charlotte’s voice trailed off as she followed Naveen to the other side of the restaurant.
Sora watched them go, a bit bewildered. “Is she always like… that?”
“Since we were kids,” Tiana laughed, into her hand. “Now, how can I help you Sora?”
Sora felt his face heat up. “Oh um… well… Charlotte asked if I was a prince, and I told her not exactly. Then she asked if I knew a prince and, well, I know several but um…” Sora trailed off, rubbing the back of his head. “Anyway, she asked if I already had a princess, so I told her that I all the princesses I knew were my friends, and I liked this guy instead and—”
“Let me guess, Charlotte asked why you hadn’t asked this guy out yet?” Tiana surmised. “Lottie likes happy endings.”
Sora chuckled. “I do too. I just, uh, haven’t figured out how to get my own yet. Charlotte suggested the beignets?”
Tiana nodded. “Well, you’re in luck. I happened to just be starting a whole new batch if you want to learn how to make them. It’s a fairly easy recipe, but, uh, some kitchen experience might be required.”
Sora nodded, “It’s okay! I, uh, had some training. Of sorts.”
“Perfect.”
Tiana led him back into the kitchen, where a table full of flour and other ingredients laid. “Now, do you know how to proof yeast?”
Sora nodded. “Yeah.”
“Great! Now, can you measure out 7 cups of flour?”
Over the course of the next half hour, Sora helped Tiana prepare the dough, talking and laughing with her, finding her very comfortable to talk to.
“So… Who is this Riku? The guy you like?”
Sora froze where he was mixing the dough, feeling his face heat up. “Well… we grew up together. He’s my best friend…”
“But you want to be more?”
After a moment of hesitation, Sora nodded, continuing to mix the dough. “For a long time… I didn’t know what love was. So I didn’t know how I felt about Riku. But, then I figured out that what I felt for Riku had to be love. I just… didn’t know it yet. But now—”
“But now you do,” Tiana finished. “And you want to let him know.”
“Yeah.” Sora grinned, thinking of Riku. How kind and strong and brave he was.
How a single look from Riku would make Sora’s chest fill with the emotion he now knew as love.
Tiana hummed, motioning for Sora to stop stirring before he overmixed the dough. “Well. My mother always says that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”
Sora thought a keyblade would be more effective, but maybe the stomach thing was unique to this world.
“Well! That’s all we can do to this batch for now.”
“Huh?” The dough certainly didn’t look like the pastries Charlotte had described.
Tiana laughed. “We’ll have to let it chill for a few hours. But I still have some dough from yesterday we can use so I can show you how to fry them.”
Using the leftover dough that they carefully cut into squares, Tiana taught Sora how to check the temperature of the oil, and how to fry the squares of dough until they were perfect.
“Now, for the final touch!” Tiana proclaimed, dusting a fair amount of powdered sugar over the top of them. “You ready to try one?”
“Yeah!” Sora’s mouth watered. They smelled delicious.
Tiana passed one over and Sora took a bite.
It was delicious. Warm and soft, but crunchy on the outside. And the powdered sugar—
“These are amazing!” Sora exclaimed, mouth still full.
Tiana laughed around her own mouthful. “Charlotte might be on to something. A plateful of these shared between you and your Riku, and you might just find those words to tell him how you feel.”
