[Team One] Nothing is out of our reach

So mousi pitched this idea and it developed a life of its own.

He'd do his best to slip away without either of them noticing. Sakuma felt bad about leaving his friends like that but really, the two only had eyes for each other anyway, so they probably wouldn’t even notice that he was gone until much, much later.

Once he had gotten away far enough, he broke into a run and then made it into the train last minute, the doors closing just as he’d gotten his backpack inside.

Heaving a sigh of relief, he pulled out his phone and laughed painedly when he saw a wall of notifications. Of course Watanabe had messaged him and the other’s messages had grown more and more annoyed with time. He quickly wrote a reply.

When he got to the venue people had already started to line up according to their ticket numbers. It didn’t take Sakuma long to find his friends somewhere in the middle of the line. As usual they had gotten numbers that weren’t too high and not too low. Once again they would merely be just another set of faces in the crowd.

“How nice of you to finally show up,” Watanabe huffed.

“Sorry! I got tied up at university and couldn’t find the right timing to get away. But I made it!”

“Lucky bastard,” Watanabe crossed his arms. “You owe me at least two cheki for this.”

“Okay,” Sakuma laughed and then looked ahead at the start of the line. “Any changes?”

“They shuffled the stage times. Apparently there’s a new group that got added last minute. It’s going to be their first performance. I think their agency is the main source of income of this venue, so they were added to the program.” Watanabe updated Sakuma on the latest developments. “Some new idol or dance and vocal group. I didn’t get any details.”

Sakuma nodded and then they changed topics, talking about the reason they had come to the venue tonight. But life worked in funny ways.

A few hours later, ‘just some new idol or dance and vocal group’ had turned into ‘I have fallen hard and fast’. And on his way home, Sakuma found himself scouring the internet for any information on the new group that he could possibly find.

Luckily for him, the group appeared in other events along with his and Watanabe’s main group, so he was able to watch their performances without having to make an excuse for it.

Sakuma found himself going alone more and more often though as Watanabe’s time was taken up by the other’s boyfriend. Sakuma was happy for his friend, in more ways than one. Watanabe had reunited with his childhood friend by chance at a restaurant he and Sakuma had checked out after an event. And after some back and forth, the two had started dating. And Watanabe actually ate the food the other served him. So he was looking great lately. Sakuma didn’t want to get between his friends’ happiness. And going alone wasn’t all bad. There were other fans he knew around, people he and Watanabe had hung out with before.

But then came the day his new group announced their first solo event.

Going to an all male underground event all by himself was quite nerve wracking to say the least. Sakuma kept to the side and back and tried to blend in with all the girls in the crowd. He’d come straight from his part-time job at a dance studio and was technically still in his work clothes - an oversized t-shirt, track pants and sneakers - and had hurriedly pulled a cap over his mussed up head of curly hair. He was relieved to see that some of the girls had dressed up in a similar fashion, so he didn’t stick out too much.

But then it was time for the tokutenkai. He hadn’t planned on staying for that but fate had had something in store for him. His ticket number had been one of the lucky 7 to hit for a free selfie.

Which is how he found himself in a line, waiting for the group to come back out after the performance portion of the event finished. His heart rate seemed to accelerate with every single girl who moved forward and thus brought him closer and closer to the front of the line.

When it was his turn, Sakuma tripped over a bag left on the ground and he would have fallen on his face if it hadn’t been for a pair of strong arms that caught him before that could happen.

“Whoa be careful there. Are you alright?”

Sakuma only managed to nod. He then handed over his phone for the selfie. His breath hitched a little when he felt the other wrap an arm around him for the selfie and then he heard the shutter sound of the camera, indicating that the picture had been taken. He accepted his phone back with a quiet ‘thank you’ and then hurried off.

His heart was still beating like crazy once he made it outside the venue. Hearing and feeling the other up close like that. He had never had his brain short circuit quite like THAT.

He almost jumped out of his skin when he heard someone speak to him.

“Uhm...you’re a guy, right?”

“Uh yeah…”

“And you’re a fan, too, right? We’ve seen you at lots of events!”

Despite the conversation starter having been his gender, Sakuma quickly found that it didn’t matter whether he was a guy or girl. People were just happy to share the happiness of being in the same fandom. He exchanged LINE contacts with the girls after their conversation - all the way to the station and beyond, until they had to get off the train and go their separate ways.

The conversation continued online. It was great to have friends to talk to about something he liked. Although one comment had been a little embarrassing.

When the topic of the selfies had come up, the other girls had shared their shots from the event with their respective favourite members. So Sakuma had shared his as well.

‘That is such a cute shot! You totally have the perfect girlfriend size for Iwamoto-kun! I’m jealous! I look like a dwarf next to Meme even in heels!’

Heat had shot into his face so he had quickly stirred the conversation elsewhere. But he had never been able to look at the picture the same way again since.

Thanks to making friends with other fans, going to the events became more and more fun and instead of feeling nervous, Sakuma found himself looking forward to going and meeting his friends to enjoy the performances together and then talk and laugh afterwards.

He still couldn’t work up the courage to take any more pictures with his favourite members, though, so he usually waited in the back until the girls were done with theirs.

One day, though, the girls ‘bullied’ him into taking a cheki, saying how it was Iwamoto’s Birthday event and he should go and hand over his present in person and get a cheki to commemorate the day as well. So he had given in and hadn’t thought much about it. Not until he had handed over his present to the other and waited to get the cheki taken.

“It’s been a while since we took a picture, together, hasn’t it? Since the first solo event.”

Sakuma was too surprised to really say a thing, his eyes widened and for one moment he looked up and straight into Iwamoto’s eyes. It was that exact moment the camera captured on film and Sakuma kept looking at the chek picture on his way home with a strange, warm and fuzzy feeling growing in his chest.

He’d thought he’d merely be one face in the crowd - and Iwamoto was popular, so his crowd was quite big - but no, the other had remembered him.

It lit a fire inside of him.

‘Doesn’t the choreography for the new song look really cool?’
‘It does! Some of the girls were talking about trying to learn it and record it for YouTube.’
‘Do you want to try, too? I can ask at the dance studio I work at if we can borrow a room.’
‘That would be so cool! Could you??’

And that was the start of a series of YouTube videos. As an experienced dancer and dance teacher himself, it didn’t take Sakuma too long to learn the choreographies. It helped that he also liked them a lot. He’d then spend some time teaching it to his friends and then they would record a ‘we tried to dance to this song’ video together and uploaded it on a fan channel.

One of the videos got particularly many hits, the ‘all girls idol style version’ in which all of them had dressed up extra girly. Including Sakuma, who had gotten a makeover and wig. It had been fun, albeit a tiny bit embarrassing.

The tiny bit of embarrassment turned into full-blown mortification at the next event.

“So, did you guys see the video on YouTube where some of our fans did a dance cover of our song but as girl idols? I thought the quality of that was super high. I was impressed!”

“Me, too! I was really moved. Like our fans really are awesome and super creative.”

“If that were a real group, who’d be your favourite member?”

“Mh, I guess purple.”

“She’s your fan, so that checks out?”

“How about you, Hikaru?”

“Me? Pink.”

“Oh really? She doesn’t seem like your type.”

“Nah, she’s definitely Hikaru’s type! Did you see how she dances?”

“She is pretty cute. And yeah damn those hips don’t lie!”

“She has a bright and nice smile! I bet she’s a nice person!”

“Aw, Raul, you’re so cute and innocent.”

After the live, the girls got together excitedly and some were teasing Sakuma about being popular with the boys. Sakuma laughed in embarrassment but then expressed his happiness at the fact that their hard work had paid off. Not that they had done it to attract the attention from the boys but because they had had fun but this was an added bonus.

Attention from the boys wouldn’t be all the videos would bring to Sakuma, though.

However the words did have an effect on him. He’d felt a shift in his feelings towards Iwamoto lately but the oher’s words tonight had driven something home inside of him.

Sexuality wise Sakuma had come to terms with being bisexual sometime during Junior High already and having the hots for a male wasn’t anything new for him. But somehow this time felt different. He couldn’t really figure out why, though. And fate had more in store for him still.

A few days later he was checking his shift schedule at work when the owner of the dance studio came into the office. “Hey, Sakkun, do you think you could come in on Thursday? We got a request to use Studio B to record something for an online streaming event and no one else who knows how to handle all the stuff is available during the hours they put in and I’ll probably be busy talking to the people in charge about details, so I’d like one more person to be here.”

“Oh sure. I have nothing else going on that day, so I can come in.”

“You’re a lifesaver! I’ll put in dinner?”

“Yay!” Sakuma laughed and then added the shift to the schedule.

When Thursday rolled around Sakuma welcomed the crew and helped them to set up in the studio. Since he wasn’t going to teach any classes or dance himself for this, he was dressed in normal street wear, blue jeans and a white t-shirt. Since he was helping the crew, he also carried some cables and tape around, which made him look like one of the ADs.

His university major came in handy as he helped with the cameras and lighting. He enjoyed working behind the scenes like this and he was able to learn more from the pros on site.

“Thanks for the help, Sakuma-kun. We’ll count on you during the recording as well.”

“Ah, you’re welcome! I’m learning a lot, so I should be thanking you!” Sakuma smiled.

“You’re a good guy,” the director smiled and then looked up. “Is he here yet?”

“Yes, just arrived!” The AD called over and then the door opened.

A tall male stepped into the room and bowed to the gathered crew, “My name is Iwamoto Hikaru and I will be in your care for the recording today.”

Sakuma froze.

He tried to stay out of sight for the recording, feeling a little awkward. But he watched with great interest - Iwamoto was showing off new choreography for the recording.

Once the recording wrapped up, Sakuma helped to clean up and then saw off the crew as well. A few members stayed behind to talk to the owner and probably to finalize payment and whatnot. Sakuma went back to the studio for one last check and then to lock up.

When he stood in front of the mirror wall, he couldn’t help replaying some of the things he had seen earlier and his body moved before he knew it.

“You have good memory.”

The voice pulled him back into reality and Sakuma lost his balance in surprise. A strong pair of arms caught him before he could fall on his butt.

“Seems like we do this every other time we meet.” Iwamoto smiled down at him.

“You- You realized?”

“Of course I recognized you. I haven’t forgotten your face ever since the day we first met.”

Sakuma’s heart was beating so fast he felt like his chest was going to burst. He was panicking inside but he remained somewhat calm on the outside.

“Thank you, Iwamoto-kun. That makes me happy.”

“Say, Sakuma,” Iwamoto let the name roll of his tongue, “Do you like me?”

“Eh? Yes, I mean I- yes?” Sakuma felt like his brain was going to fry.

“Good because that feeling is quite mutual.” Iwamoto said softly and leaned in.

Sakuma’s eyes widened. Reality really was stranger than fiction. The situation right now seemed like it would have been too perfect, even for something on TV or in a manga. But it was happening. It was real.
