[Team Three] Campfire Tales

In which Riou and Dice debate what it means to hope. Hypnosis Mic, 450 words, T.
"Hope?" Riou frowned. "No, this soldier does not hope."

"Whaddya mean you don't hope!?" Dice looked up sharply from across the fire. "Doesn't that get lonely?"

"Hope gets one killed."

Now it was Dice's turn to frown. "No way. Hope is what keeps a person going! Sure, maybe I lost big today and barely escaped with my skin, but who knows what tomorrow holds. Tomorrow I bet Lady Luck will turn in my favor, and I'll pay Gentarou back everything I borrowed. So long as you stay alive, there's always another day! What's a man without his dreams?"

Riou shifted, staring into the crackling flames. "In the war, the ones with the biggest dreams were the first to fall. The boys came in with wide eyes, dreams of a better future, and hope of a short-lived war. 'I bet the war will be over by the end of the month,' they'd say. It wasn't. 'Definitely by the end of the year.' It still dragged on. 'I hope I get to see my family again someday,' said huddled hollow-eyed around the dying fire. Too many of them never did. This soldier survived because he never hoped."

"Doesn't sound like hope is what got them to me. Sounds like losing hope was the problem."

"Then isn't it safer not to hope at all? This soldier cannot lose hope if he never had it in the first place."

Dice shuddered. "I don't get how you can live like that. What's life without a bit of excitement!? You can't win big if you don't take the chance. Sure, sometimes you lose too, but that's just how it goes. You lose, you pick yourself up and try again. There's no thrill in playing it safe."

"This soldier is not interested in thrill," Riou said dryly. "This soldier cares only to provide for his own needs and to be of service to Jyuto and Samatoki."

"How about this? I'll make you a deal. You stay here and keep doing what you're doing, and I'll go out and hope enough for both of us. If things go well, I'll come back and tell you all about it, and if they go wrong, I'll come back here too. A man can't lose hope when he knows there's a hot fire, a place to sleep, and food to fill his stomach waiting for him."

"This soldier does not understand, but Dice is always welcome at this soldier's fire."

"Don't get why you don't have more company," Dice muttered. "Especially if you feed them all like this." He held out his bowl. "Think I could get seconds?"
