LOL @ myself always writing snippets of this angstshipping fic but never getting to the plot.

Yu-gi-oh, g-rated, very short


"Something came up that needs my attention." Ryou grabs his jacket, fumbling over the tangled sleeves to slip it back on.

Malik gets up from the couch to follow him to the door. "So you're just gonna ditch me?" he says, half-joking just to cover up his concern for the sudden departure.

"Um, yes?" Ryou gives him a slightly exasperated look in between his fight to get his shoes on without falling over.

"Is everything okay?"

Ryou sighs, running his hands briefly over his face as if that would wash away whatever is causing his current stress. It's a big change from the relaxed attitude he'd had while they were watching movies and talking. Before his phone had rung.

"It's fine," Ryou answers.

Malik thinks he knows Ryou well enough by now to spot the polite lie.

"Do you want me to go with you?" he offers, grabbing his own shoes.

Ryou freezes, hand halfway to the doorknob. He looks confused that Malik would even offer. It's the look of someone who's used to handling everything on his own.

Malik recognizes it because it's the same one he sees in the mirror most mornings.

"I don't mind," Malik adds, slipping his shoes on and grabbing his keys.

Ryou's shoulders drop, like he's not holding the weight of the whole world on them anymore.

"Okay, I'll explain on the way."

I love this. While I don’t necessarily know the context, this description really conveys an important character point about both characters. Awesome!
