[team one] Fireflies

original short story, G, 442 words

"We'll just have to ask the fireflies for directions!" Griff scoffed, chucking the broken compass into the field. He immediately plopped himself on the ground and sighed.

Aster sighed herself. "They're not fireflies, you know. And they don't talk, either."

"Hmm," he responded, though Aster could tell he wasn't *really* wondering.

The gleams floated, indifferent to their lack of direction.

"We don't see these back where I'm from, you know. There's not enough mana."

Which is why he'd traveled all the way out to the citadel to find a chiurgeon. Which was why Aster was now traveling in the *wrong direction* to bring him back home.

Not that their compass could confirm they were traveling in the correct direction to do *that* anymore, of course.

Aster sat down next to Griff and looked up at the night sky. She noticed the clouds were starting to break up and started scanning the sky for any stars she recognized. It was just about autumn, so with that in mind, east should be...

"Hey, Aster." Griff broke her concentration.

"Hmm?"

"Do you really think you can help my mother? When... if we make it back." Griff looked down and ran his fingers through the grass.

Aster decided honesty was the best choice. "I don't know."

Griff's face fell.

"But... luckily for us right now, I do know a bit about the stars."

"Really? I thought people like you couldn't study that kind of thing."

Aster nodded. "When I decided to restart my life and enroll, I did so with the hope that I might be able to learn about the stars... and the comet. Not really because I wanted to work for the citadel."

Aster had only ever told Dahlia that, and yet here she was, telling some kid.

She wondered if Dahlia knew that.

She wondered if Dahlia's secrets had found other owners, too. Though there could be a worrying implication to that, too.

"... so you snuck out and borrowed books from the library? That must've been hard. *I* would've done it some other way, you know."

"It *was* hard. But, I'm glad I lived that life."

"Why? Because you were able to learn so much?"

Aster shook her head. "Because I met somebody important to me that way."

"You? Somebody important?"

"Yes. Very much so."

Griff's eyes widened, catching the reflection of the moonlight for a moment. Then he pressed his lips together and turned away. "Hmph. Thought you church folks were all emotionless stiffs. Guess I was wrong."

Aster smiled. "East is that way. Shall we continue?"
