[Team Three] Overnight

Stepping into Sk8 fandom for the first time with some short Joe/Cherry angst. 400 words, T.
"S is very dangerous indeed."

"You're not supposed to say things like that, Carla," Joe said.

"Why not?" Carla asked. "My master has programmed me to collect and analyze on relevant data on the sport to better serve him. According to my analysis, the injury rates is S are significantly higher than in comparable sports, and higher than in skateboarding as a whole."

"You think I don't already know that?" Kojirou muttered. It was Ainosuke's fault of course, like so many things. It hadn't always been like that. Not back in high school when they'd been a bunch of bored teenagers goofing off, and no one had anything worse than some scrapes and bruises and maybe a broken wrist.

When had they gone wrong? When had it stopped being a fun game?

He knew the answer of course. It was around the same time that sleepless nights with Kaoru had started to turn into glittering rivers and panoramic city lights seen from hotel rooms he never could have afforded himself. It was when he'd refused to be a third wheel forever, and when Ainosuke's other obligations had pulled him away and turned him into the third wheel instead.

In the end, he had taken Kaoru (or had Kaoru chosen him?), and work had taken Ainosuke. What was S now? Maybe to the ones at the bottom, the small fry who never expected to win, it was still fun and games, but up near the top? Up anywhere high enough to catch Ainosuke's attention? No matter what Ainosuke said, there was no fun up there anymore. No love for the sport, or for a good competition. Only Ainosuke, looking down, and crushing anything that came into his circle in hopes he could wring out some small drop of enjoyment before he tossed the ruined scraps aside.

Kojirou dragged a hand across his face. His eyes felt as scratchy as the dirt ground into Kaoru's skin. He was too old to be pulling all nighters like this. Kaoru was too old to be pushing himself like this. None of them were as indestructible as they'd felt back in high school. Oh to be young and flexible and so sure in their own invincibility again.
You're up, Ziskandra
