sorry for being late!
EXO's space themed comeback inspired me quite a bit with this XD
Baekhyun-centric | PG | 1,303 words
Behind his back, the space ship was shaking and squeaking as it exited the hyperspace and was left floating peacefully in the empty darkness.
“I really need to get this thing serviced before it falls apart,” Baekhyun muttered as he checked the meters and turned the ship around. A reddish, rather small planet appeared ahead of him.
He double checked the coordinates that Minseok had sent him and indeed, that was his destination. DS-3871, a lonely planet sailing on the edge of the universe. Why Minseok wanted to meet him there exactly, Baekhyun didn’t know but he supposed he would find out soon enough.
He set the course towards the planet, turned on the autopilot and got up from the pilot chair. He stretched his back, lifting his arms over his head. It had been a long flight.
Mongryong, who had been napping on the co-pilot chair, lifted his head and looked at Baekhyun. He gave a low, questioning grunt.
“We’ll be there soon and you’ll get to stretch your legs,” Baekhyun told the dog. Mongryong often got impatient during long journeys. And he hated the condensed food supplies Baekhyun fed him on the ship.
“Can you keep an eye on the course?” Baekhyun asked the dog and pointed at the main controls. “I’ll use the restroom quickly.”
When they got closer to the surface, Baekhyun steered the ship towards a vast sand field that Minseok’s coordinates pointed at. Below he saw an ancient looking service station and a small town, both partly covered in sand. The landscape was dry, sandy and rocky; empty and dead for as far as the eye could see. Baekhyun was really starting to wonder why Minseok had asked him to come there. It was too late to turn back now, though.
As Baekhyun guided the ship closer to the ground, Mongryong was peering through the windows with his front paws against the dashboard. He was excited, and as soon as the ship touched the ground, he jumped down from the chair and scuttled out of the cockpit. Baekhyun knew he was hurrying to the entrance, ready to sprint out the second Baekhyun would open the hatch. Baekhyun turned down the engines and followed the dog.
When he got to the entrance though, Mongryong wasn’t excitedly vibrating in the front of the hatch but stood still and tense, growling lowly.
“What is it, boy?” Baekhyun asked quietly as he walked up to the dog. Mongryong looked at him and then the hatch again and continued growling. Baekhyun opened a panel next to the hatch and pulled out a pistol. Whatever or whoever it was behind the door, it was something to be cautious about if Mongryong was acting like that.
Baekhyun shifted closer to the hatch, his pistol ready. He whispered at Mongryong, telling him to go back to the cockpit just in case. The dog was smart but he would be in too much danger there.
“Go!” Baekhyun said and the corgi waddled away.
His finger on the trigger, Baekhyun pressed the button on the panel and the hatch slid open with a low hiss. He peered out carefully. The field they had landed on seemed empty. He took a couple of steps forward, glancing around. Still nothing. He was just about to whistle at Mongryong, when he suddenly felt something hard pressing between his shoulder blades.
“Drop the pistol,” a low voice said behind him. Baekhyun was incredulous. He hadn’t seen nor heard anyone.
“Wha–Who is it?”
“Drop it!”
The voice was demanding, and the barrel against his back dug a bit deeper. Baekhyun dropped the weapon grudgingly and lifted his arms. His mind was speeding through different options; taking a risk and trying hand-to-hand combat, or calling for Mongryong in hope that it might surprise the attacker. He never got to choose, since right then there was a loud exclamation.
“Whoa, incredible!”
Baekhyun heard the shout and some clapping and couldn’t believe his ears for a moment. But then he noticed Minseok, who appeared behind the ship. His friend was smiling and walking up to them. Baekhyun was more than a bit dumbfounded and only distantly noted that the barrel had disappeared from his back. He dared to look over his shoulder and saw a short-ish guy with a weird dark robe and a mechanic overalls peeking from under it. He put the gun he had been pointing at Baekhyun back in the holster.
“What the hell? What’s going on?” Baekhyun managed to spit out when Minseok stopped before them. “Who’s this? Why was he pointing a gun at me?”
“Because I asked,” Minseok said, grinning a little.
“What?”
“He is Kyungsoo, a mechanic and apparently also quite a gunsman. He will join us.”
“Nice to meet you,” the new guy said, bowing a little.
Baekhyun looked between Minseok and the guy, trying to make sense of the situation.
“Why, we don’t need new people. And I decide who I will take on my ship. I’d rather have someone who doesn’t point guns at me,” Baekhyun said prickly.
Minseok rolled his eyes. “C’mon, it was sort of a test, I wanted to see if he could sneak up on you and he did! I think that’s impressive.”
“The gun also wasn’t loaded,” the guy – Kyungsoo – offered. “I’m sorry for startling you, but I would really need this job.”
“Absolutely no–”
“Baekhyun,” Minseok interrupted him. “We need a mechanic. This ship needs a proper repair, it’s a miracle that it’s still flying and in one piece.”
Baekhyun opened his mouth to protest but there was really nothing he could say against Minseok’s argument. Damn it.
“I don’t agree with your hiring method, really,” he told Minseok instead. Yes, maybe his pride was a bit hurt since some random mechanic guy had just managed to surprise him like that. Baekhyun would still like to think that he could’ve taken Kyungsoo down if he had carried out either one of his earlier plans.
“Well, you’re not the only one deciding, even though you’re the captain. The crew gets to vote, too.”
“Then it’s a tie between you and me,” Baekhyun said.
“Not quite”, Minseok told him. “You’re forgetting someone.”
He whistled. “Mongryong, come here!”
They could hear the paws padding against the metal inside the ship before Mongryong appeared from the door and sprinted happily at Minseok, wagging its inexistent tail.
“Hello, boy! How are you, I missed you!”
“What are you trying to do?” Baekhyun asked, even though he had a worrying hunch.
Minseok grinned at him and then turned to talk to Mongryong again.
“Mongryong, look. This is Kyungsoo, he would like to join us. What do you think?”
Kyungsoo crouched down and Mongryong turned his attention to the new human. His butt was still shaking and he waddled from Minseok to Kyungsoo, sniffing him a bit before jumping excitedly against him. He licked Kyungsoo’s face and was vibrating happily when Kyungsoo petted him.
“Aww, I think Mongryong likes him,” Minseok said, sounding way too pleased. “So that would be two against one.”
“Damn it, Mongryong,” Baekhyun muttered. Of course he would accept anyone in exchange for petting and scratching.
“Alright, it’s decided! Welcome on board,” Minseok said to Kyungsoo.
“Thank you,” Kyungsoo smiled a bit.
“Here, let me show you the ship! Could you do some repair work for it right away,” Minseok said and guided Kyungsoo inside.
Baekhyun let out a long sigh and sat down by the entrance. What a landing. What a twist. Mongryong sat down beside him and nudged Baekhyun’s hand with his snout.
“Don’t try,” Baekhyun said, feigning more annoyance than he actually felt. He let the dog wait a moment before laying his hand on his head, scratching behind the ears.
“You traitor.”
amaxingbaek, you're up!
