KH Sora & Vanitas, 500~ words, rated T

He figured an even tighter squeeze served as a sufficient answer to: "You... okay there, Vanitas?"

Vanitas tried his best to keep his true reaction off his face, but not only would Sora not be fooled, but the rest of his… friends, wouldn’t be either by the looks of it. He attempted a grin but barely managed a twitch of his lips, reminiscent of that one time Sora made him eat a sour candy. The tingling in his jaw made him shudder just to remember it.

“If you’d just let me back out then—”

“No,” Vanitas snarled, shutting Sora down immediately. The only reason Sora’s body was still standing was because of Vanitas. If he relinquished control, Sora wouldn’t be able to withstand the pain, let alone make it back to somewhere safe. Maybe Sora trusted he was safe with these people, but Vanitas sure as hell didn’t.

“Are you okay, Sora?”

Vanitas glanced up, glaring at Sora’s friends. They crowded him in a contrived, worried semi-circle, igniting Vanitas’ fight or flight impulse. If he fought, Sora would get angry and likely force himself free. If he ran, it’d smart his pride but at the very least he’d be out of the situation sooner without risking their shared body. Of course, he could potentially ask one of them to attempt to heal them, but he doubted they knew. They seemed oddly incapable of the spells Sora took for granted. Vanitas himself didn’t know how to cure others let along himself without the use of darkness, and Sora’s body wouldn’t be able to handle the surge of it even if he tried.

Everything was so annoying. Gruffly, he affected rubbing at his eyes and yawning, the way Sora often did when he was tired. It was a galling display of honesty that chafed, but acting was better than them finding out Sora had a free soul along for the ride. God knows they might react like Riku, the protective pathetic dog he was, and attempt to separate Vanitas by any means.

“Don’t call him that,” Sora grouched, and Vanitas held back the urge to roll his eyes. He could insult Sora all day long, but the moment Vanitas touched on Riku, Sora would grow protective and fight back. He was just as bad, truth be told.

“I’m going to head back,” Vanitas announced, and turned on his foot before any of them could stop him. He sensed a few attempting to follow him and hastened his steps. They’d probably bug Sora on that communication device, but that was Sora’s problem. All he cared about was getting the hell out of there and back somewhere where Sora could fix himself without passing out.

That was all that mattered right now.
