[Team four] dance break

Another bit of my neverending angstshipping fic but I've skipped waaaay ahead here to an almost-confession lol.

YGO, g-rated, very short

The next song starts and Malik's ears perk up. Unlike the rest of the generic pop songs on this playlist, he actually knows this one. He's heard it on commercials and in the convenience stores like a million times in the past two weeks. In fact, he's sure he could probably do the whole dance routine that goes with it by now too.

It feels like the universe is sending him a sign to take a break from studying.

Malik closes his notebook, tosses it to the floor, and hops up from the couch.

"Dance break," he declares.

Ryou glances up from his own pile of notes at the table. "Excuse me?"

Eyes wide, he looks startled by even the idea of dancing, which means Malik definitely has to rope him into this now.

"Take a thirty second break from studying to do this dumb dance with me," Malik insists, stepping up to the table and gently tugging on Ryou's sleeve like an insistent child.

Ryou relents, though he still looks baffled by the concept of dancing around the living room. Thankfully, Malik has no such qualms -- he's working more these says on making up for what he missed out on during his shitty childhood.

"It goes like this," he demonstrates, moving his arms and legs in rhythm with the music. It looks completely silly, especially because he isn't really that coordinated, but it feels good to move around after too long studying on the couch.

"This is so silly," Ryou says. He starts off with arms only, the stiff movements reminiscent of robots. "Am I doing it right?"

"There's no wrong way to dance," Malik points out, and then improvs a new dance move just to prove the point.

This finally gets a laugh to slip out of Ryou's mouth, and Malik grins. With a fancy spin, he turns around and then reaches out to grab Ryou's hands.

The song has ended and another upbeat one takes its place, but Malik is more focused on Ryou now and keeping that smile on his face. He tugs him closer, improvising more dance moves that Ryou goes along with.

Until finally, they're a lot closer together than when they first started dancing. Standing toe to toe almost, and Malik feels his face flush as he wonders if this is the moment when he decides to close the gap between them. It's not like he hasn't thought about it before.

"Ryou, I..." he begins, but with no plan for what he might confess here. Should he have planned this out? Written something down?

And then, the phone rings.
