~700 words of an excerpt for a g-rated kh fic I'm writing "Kingdom Hearts 2 Princess of Light ~remix~" (Some small, *small* hints of Kairi/Olette)

“I’ll have something to look forward to next time!” Kairi grinned as the train behind her whistled. “Oh. I think that’s our cue.”

She started to take off the sweater Olette had loaned her, but the brunet shook her head.

“It’s ok! Now you have to come back to return it.”

Kairi paused, her heart jumping a little bit at the Olette’s teasing tone.

What was that about?

“Kairi! The train!” Sora called out. Donald and Goofy were already at the top of the steps, with Donald tapping his foot to hurry her along.

“Coming!” Kairi called back, waving at Olette and the others before climbing the steps to the train platform.

She had almost been worried about what train the King had meant, but upon reaching the platform, she realized that there was only one he could have meant. It was bright purple, with star shaped windows and a tall triagular hat at the front of the train.

What other train could it have been.

Kairi grinned and turned back, surprised to find Olette crying. “What’s wrong?”

“Huh?” Olette raised a hand to her cheek, looking surprised when it came back wet. “I… I don’t know.”

“It’s like…. We’ve only known you a short time, but we’re sad you’re leaving,” Hayner said, wiping under his own eyes. Pence was pulling tissues out for the three of them.

“Oh,” Kairi felt tears prck at her own eyes and she stubbornly held them back. “We’ll see each other again.”

“Yeah!” Sora encouraged. “Sometime soon, Kairi and I will be back to visit. We promise, right?”

Kairi nodded. “It’s a promise.”

Olette, Hayner, and Pence seemed to accept their word. The train whistle blew once more so Sora and Kairi quickly boarded. They waved out the window as the train pulled away from the station. The others waved back for as long as they could before the train turned down the track and they vanished from sight.

Sora sighed wistfully, wiping under his own eye. “You know. I think I miss them already. It’s kinda weird though, but. My heart is sad.”

Kairi stared at her friend as a few droplets fell down her cheeks. Her own heart ached for some reason, though she couldn’t quite place the reason. “I know what you mean.”

The tracks before them didn’t seem to lead to any of the areas surrounding Twilight Town. With a sudden flash of light, the scenery out the window changed from an ever present sunset to the stars and words they could see from the night sky.

Their journey now set on it’s path, Kairi turned to Sora, questions still swirling in her head. “Sora?”

“Hmm?”

“Last time I remember seeing you, we were closing the door to the realm of darkness and you and Riku were on the other side. Along with te King.” Kairi placed her hands on her hips in thought. “So… how’d you get out?”

Sora hummed, his brows furrowing in thought. “I’m… honestly not sure. It’s a bit hazy.”

“Did the King get you out?” Donald asked.

Sora resolutely shook his head. “Not that he didn’t help but. I just… I don’t know. I’m sorry. I wish I knew. You know I do. Cause if I know how I got out then… if Riku’s still there…”

“We could get him out too,” Kairi finished. Biting her lip, she decided to remain silent for now on what her own hazy memories told her. About a replica Riku, and Namine… and the other blond boy— the one who was not Roxas. None of them had been there when they woke, which only serviced to confuse Kairi more. Why had they been moved? Where was Riku and why was the King wearing one of those black cloaks she remembered the figures of Castle Oblivon wearing?

And where were they heading?

The train whistled once more as Kairi glanced out the window at the stars and space aurora swirling around like the questions in her mind.

Only one thing to do, she supposed.

Keep moving forward.
