[team two] untitled

continuation to this bartender!juri & salaryman!shintaro au.

juri, shintaro + morohoshi shoki | PG | 976 words

Out of order, Juri writes on a paper and sticks it to the foosball table at the back of the bar. The handles of the couple of bars are broken and need to be replaced. Juri makes a mental note to tell his brother to take care of it after the holidays.

He returns to the counter, where Shoki is being productive and building a card tower. Juri pours himself a glass of cola and watches how his friend adds the third storey with shaky hands.

The bar’s been open about 15 minutes but it’s a Golden Week Sunday so Juri is not expecting a huge crowd. He doesn’t mind quiet shifts but he does get bored easily during them. Also, they give him too much time to think. He glances over at the empty seats by the side counter.

”My regulars haven’t been here for a while,” he muses aloud to Shoki, ”you think they’ve been buried under too much paperwork?”

”What? Who? Those salarymen?”

”Yep.”

”Didn’t you hang out with one of them?” Shoki asks after a moment.

”We went to eat a couple of times after work,” Juri says. The last time, he now realizes, was over a month ago already. There’s been a pause in their texting, too. Juri has just assumed that Shintaro is busy.

“And?” Shoki prompts.

“And nothing,” Juri says, though he feels his neck heating up. “He’s fun to chat with, and he sits here often enough that I’ve got to know him somewhat.”

Shoki gives him a pointed look, like he’s not buying anything Juri says.

“What?” Juri huffs. “I’m telling the truth!”

Shoki raises his arms in defeat. “If you say so. And good for you for making new friends. I just thought… Careful that you won’t get hung up on a straight guy. That sucks.”

“I know that,” Juri says immediately. He does know... and yet.

Shoki looks like he’s about to say something else, but their first customers arrive just then, so Juri is saved from further discussion. Couple of more people stream in after the first two, so Juri joins Shoki behind the counter and starts pouring drinks.

For some time, Juri’s just working peacefully, mixing drinks, fetching more ice and exchanging a word or two with the customers. He’s just thinking of taking a short break, when he hears someone calling his name across the counter.

He turns and at first thinks that someone’s mistaking him for someone else. For the guy calling for him looks like he’s walked out of a summer TV drama, with the white tee, tanned skin and dangly golden jewelry. Definitely not their usual customer. But no, the guy still smiles and waves at him, and Juri blinks – and finally recognizes Shintaro. His stomach does this weird little somersault.

Trying to ignore that, Juri breaks into a smile and walks up to the other, still a little incredulous.

“Hi! Long time no see,” Shintaro greets him happily. His smile looks even more radiant than usually, or maybe it’s just because Juri hasn’t seen him for a while.

“Hi. I almost didn’t recognize you,” Juri says honestly and gives Shintaro a proper once-over now that he’s closer. “Where did you come from, straight from the beach?”

“Well, kind of. I was surfing in Okinawa for almost a week and just came back,” Shintaro tells him excitedly and sits down on a bar stool. “I thought I’d drop by here, since it’s been a while. And here you are!”

“Here I am,” Juri repeats dumbly. He can see that besides the t-shirt and shorts, Shintaro is also wearing flip flop sandals, and Juri would joke about that if his brain wasn’t short-circuiting right then. He has only seen Shintaro as a salaryman in a suit so far, so this tanned version of him with short sleeves and pants is a lot to take in. His hair also looks more wavy and fluffy than before. Maybe it’s all the sea water.

“So, you, uh, drinking anything?” Juri asks, wanting to busy himself with something so that he’s not ogling.

“Beer, please.”

Juri wants to pour himself one too but settles with the Cola still.

“Lucky that I caught you here today, I’ve been feeling a bit bad about not visiting lately,” Shintaro says when Juri passes him the drink.

“That’s fine, I’m sure you’re busy with work. And surfing, apparently.”

Shintaro chuckles. “A bit, but I don’t want to be. I need my weekly after-work beers, too.”

“Yeah, you better come back,” Juri tells him. “We run mostly thanks to you and Jesse!”

They laugh together and Shoki passes them right then, raising his brows at Juri and looking half amused, half judging. And Juri knows. And yet.

”By the way, you talked about that late-night restaurant near here?” Shintaro says. ”We need to go there at some point.”

”Sure!” Juri hears himself agreeing. ”Whenever you’re free.”

Soon Shintaro excuses himself and goes to the bathroom and the moment he’s out of sight, Shoki appears beside Juri, leaning on the counter. He doesn’t say anything, but gives Juri the similar pointed look he did earlier.

Juri sighs and ruffles his hair in despair.

”Sorry but did you see him?”

”I sure did,” Shoki says. ”Poor you.”

”Any chance he is secretly queer, do you think?”

”Maybe like 20%?”

”So not completely zero, huh...”

”Juri...”

”Hey, I need some hope here!”

”What you need is a good hook-up to get that out of your system,” Shoki says in a low voice.

”I don’t know…”

”Well, I do!”

Juri raises his hand to silence the other. ”Thanks for your concern and advice, buddy, but it’s no use. Let me dig my own grave in peace.”

Juri raises his hand to silence the other. ”Thanks for your concern and advice, buddy, but it’s no use. Let me dig my own grave in peace.”
