[team two] midnight diner

still the same jurishin!au. i had to cut this one short since i ran out of time, oops.

juri/shintaro | PG | ~900 words

“What matters the most to me is that my customers are happy,” said Ikeda-san, the old barkeeper, who was talking with Shintaro.

Shintaro kept praising the monjayaki they had ordered, and was now engrossed in a conversation about different dishes and the bar with Ikeda-san. Juri was sitting next to Shintaro, nursing his beer, only half-listening to the conversation but secretly happy that Shintaro seemed to like the place so much.

It was a small 12-seat diner, hidden away on a side alley in Shinjuku, but close to both the bar and Juri’s place so he often dropped by on his way home from work. The diner was open from midnight till 7am so it was perfect for his earlier shifts. And now he had finally managed to bring Shintaro along, something the other had insisted for weeks already.

Ikeda-san excused himself and turned around to serve the customers across from them. Shintaro finished the monjayaki and Juri gulped down the rest of his beer and wondered whether they should order something else. Truth be told, he was starting to feel a bit tired and had seen Shintaro stifling a yawn once or twice, too.

“Wanna order something more?” Juri asked him, since he was the guest that night.

“I don’t know… To be honest, the food is making me a bit sleepy but it’s so early! There are no trains and the taxi fare home is a lot,” Shintaro pouted a little, which shouldn’t have been as adorable as it was in Juri’s opinion. “I thought I could last till morning easily.”

“Same here,” Juri chuckled. “But hey, you can totally crash at my place until the morning. I have a spare futon! And I live like 5 minutes away.”

“Really? Would it be ok?”

“Of course!” Juri said. It would not be ok to his pining mind and heart, but that was his problem.

They paid and excited the bar with many thanks to the barkeeper Ikeda-san, promising to come back again soon. Juri shut the sliding wooden door and led Shintaro down the alley.

Now that he was walking, Juri noticed how wobbly his legs felt after just sitting down and drinking for a couple of hours. Shintaro seemed to have the same problem as him: the other swayed while walking and bumped against Juri’s side. Juri instinctively grabbed his waist to support him.

“Oops, sorry,” Shintaro said and laughed. His breath tickled Juri’s cheek. “I blame the sake, it was stronger than I thought.”

“I know,” Juri snorted and wondered whether it was a blessing or curse to have Shintaro be so close to him.

“A-are you good? I won’t be able to carry you to my place, even though the way is short.”

“Yeah, yeah, I’ll manage,” Shintaro said and straightened himself, slipping out of Juri’s hold. After a few steps though, he grabbed Juri’s arm lightly, probably for support. They proceeded like that, slowly and a bit wobbly, but proceeded. Juri led them to another, even more quiet road. His apartment was only a couple of blocks away.

While they walked, Juri’s mind was in overdrive. He was at a loss of what to do. He knew Shoki had told him to do nothing, to go and hook up with someone else, because Shintaro was out of his reach in that way. But Juri wondered... He had started to wonder, since at times it felt like Shintaro was kind of flirty with him. Juri didn’t know him well enough to judge if that was his usual behavior or not. But he had noticed it tonight, as well. Small things, like the tone of Shintaro’s voice, the weight of his gaze, the way he didn’t seem to mind Juri’s overflowing touches (it got even worse when he drank).

Juri was still wavering and indecisive when he opened the front door and let Shintaro in. They kicked off their shoes and made their way through his tiny kitchen into the actual room. Shintaro flopped down on the edge of Juri’s bed and looked around.

“Nice apartment,” he commented. “I really envy your commuting time.”

Juri laughed while he fetched them soda cans from the fridge. He laughed again when Shintaro raised his brows at the soda, looking incredulous.

“Sorry, I rarely drink alcohol at home. And I think we’ve had enough to drink for tonight already.”

“I didn’t take you as the voice of reason,” Shintaro said when Juri placed the cans on the nightstand. And there it was again, that cheeky tone and playful smirk. It made Juri’s skin tingle.

“Yeah, me neither.” Juri sighed and sat down on the bed next to Shintaro. “I really don’t wanna be the voice of reason.”

“Then don’t be.”

Juri met Shintaro’s eyes and the other was looking at him almost knowingly, a small smile on his lips. He nudged Juri lightly with his shoulder. If this wasn’t The Sign for him, he didn’t know what would be.

“Alright then,” Juri said. “I’m... kind of into you. I don’t know if it’s a good idea to tell you this, since I don’t want to spoil our friendship, and I don’t know if you like guys, let alone a guy like me, but...”

Juri trailed off and glanced at Shintaro, who was still looking at him.

“I don’t know if I’m into guys in general,” Shintaro said after a moment. “But I am into you.”
