I read a bunch of heartshipping fics recently and then my fingers slipped and this happened?? I don't know 😅
Yu-Gi-Oh, g-rated, around 300 words
"I'd like it to be true."
"Yeah, me too," Yugi agrees, "but it's only a rumor right now."
Ryou sighs wistfully again at the computer screen, clicking away from the forum speculating about a new Monster World expansion pack. He navigates back to the main message board just in case anything else interesting catches their eyes.
"I'll let you know if Grandpa hears anything," Yugi continues. "Sometimes he gets a heads up before new stuff comes into the shop."
"I'd appreciate that," Ryou beams.
Yugi is glad to see a smile on his face again. They've both had to deal with a lot of emotions over the past few months, since their other halves disappeared into the afterlife for good. Yugi had his friends and family to help him through the change, but Ryou's been distant. Struggling alone because he doesn't want anyone else to help him. Or maybe he doesn't see himself as worthy of help -- the Spirit of the Ring would do damage to anyone's self-esteem, let alone the person who had to share headspace with him.
Yugi’s glad Ryou at least agreed to hang out today. It's been fun just getting to talk about games with someone just as enthusiastic as he is.
"Maybe we can play Monster World together again whenever the expansion comes out," Yugi suggests.
Ryou freezes, suddenly looking perplexed.
"You... would want to?"
"Sure!" Yugi nods. "I'm sure my first experience with the game was a one-time only thing. Despite all that, it seemed like a lot of fun, and I know you're great as a DM. So I'm sure you'll make it a good game."
It's not like there's an evil spirit anymore to get them off-track and threaten their souls again.
Ryou thinks it over, glancing down at the computer keyboard, like he's a little embarrassed.
"Okay," he finally agrees. "Let's hope those rumors about the game expansion are true. And that it happens quickly."
Yugi grins. "Yes, absolutely!"
They return their attention back to the internet game forum again, spotting an intriguing discussion about Dungeon Dice Monsters that they just have to dive into. But Yugi doesn't forget how Ryou's whole face lit up when he got excited.
He should figure out how to do that again.
