[team two] Kusoinaka, part 3
a short continuation to the inaka!AU. juri, jesse, ~480 words.
“That’s crazy!”
Jesse’s voice crackles a bit over the line, probably due to the poor signal. Juri’s sitting next to the open window in his room upstairs, where the service seems a bit better. He hopes the call doesn’t cut off; he has only just finished telling his friend about the poor internet situation.
“Well, this might just cure your gaming and SNS addiction, think about that,” Jesse muses, a smile apparent in his voice.
Juri snorts. “Shut up.”
He can’t help a smile tugging at his lips, though, hearing Jesse’s voice and venting out at him. Juri misses his friend and the city. Normally, they’d be doing this over glasses of beer, at a bar or at Jesse’s place. They don’t meet as often as they should, since Juri’s usually stuck at home and refusing to go all the way to Tokyo, and since Jesse’s calendar is usually booked for weeks to come. But when they finally make time for each other, it’s always a blast.
Now, just hearing Jesse’s voice and his cackle of a laugh cheers Juri up. Jesse utters a short laugh on the other end before returning to the subject.
“How’s it otherwise? Are you busting your ass from dawn to dusk?”
“Not yet, at least,” Juri says. “It’s been fine so far, Aunt Hisako lets me sleep in the mornings and cooks for me. But there’s quite a lot to do in the house and most of the stuff is way beyond my skills, so we’ll see…”
“It’ll be fine!” Jesse assures quickly, ever positive. “I believe in you! But say, have you already befriended every grandpa and grandma in the neighborhood?”
“Uh, I have not… But does a random farmer guy as an acquaintance count?”
“What? Sure! Tell me more.”
So Juri recounts the weird encounter at the conbini, and how the guy had come to look at Aunt Hisako’s car. He hadn’t been able to fix it right away but had recommended a repair shop nearby, even promising to help tow the car there if it wouldn’t start. Juri had been grateful, as had Aunt Hisako, who’d welcomed the guy – Shintaro – as warmly as if he’d been a family member. Turned out Aunt Hisako got all her onions and yuzus straight from Shintaro’s family farm.
“And then she promised that as a thanks for the car, I could go to the farm and help out in turn,” Juri whines. “As if this isn’t troublesome enough already!”
Now Jesse is fully cackling on the other end.
“You’ll be like, cleaning dung and taking care of cows? You? Good luck, mate, and nice knowing you.”
“Hey!” Juri protests, though he’s smiling too. “You trust me with fixing the house but not visiting a farm? I’m hurt.”
“Nah, I’ve just seen you with animals bigger than dogs, mate,” Jesse retorts. “I repeat: good luck!”
rin_aokuro, your turn!
