[team three] an interrupted brunch

This should have been posted back on September 7 (I did tag [personal profile] lovesgaze on discord!) but I just...didn't get around to it.

Jill & Lucy, Jill & Eustace (Narnia); G; 300 words

“Where the hell did he go?” Jill complains, peering around the corner. Lucy leans against the bricks, closing her eyes against the unseasonable sun and wishing she’d brought along the pair of sunglasses she definitely didn’t just think about buying when they were on sale at Aldi.

“I thought we were going for brunch,” she says—it’s not a complaint, shut up Edmund—and pokes Jill with her elbow. Jill ignores her. Rude.

“This takes priority,” Jill hisses, grabbing Lucy’s arm. Lucy stumbles along, almost dropping her phone, and regrets accepting Jill’s invitation. Her stomach growls, the traitor.

Eustace is just leaving the bookshop, bell ringing overhead as the door swings shut behind him, when he sees what he could swear is the arm of Jill’s favourite and slightly ragged top disappearing around the corner. One of these days he’s going to cut it up into strips and make it into a rag rug.

He sighs, hitching the loops of the paper sack higher on on arm and pulling out his phone.

“Weren’t you going to brunch with Lucy?”

He can’t hear from this distance, but he can imagine Jill’s face as she reads the message.

Jill frowns down at her phone.

“I knew it!” she says, wrinkling her nose in displeasure. She leaves the sender, presumably Eustace, on read and starts pushing Lucy down the pavement.

“Can we go for brunch now?” Lucy asks. Her stomach feels like a gaping maw, and she has an archery session in—she glances at her phone—two hours.

“Yes,” Jill says. Lucy can’t see her face from where’s still being herded along, but Jill sounds determined. “He knows I’m on to him, so I’ll wait till he’s lowered his guard.”

Lucy sighs. These two and their birthday gift guessing rivalry. It’s ridiculous.
