Kochi’s piece for my GOT!AU. He’s a maester in a castle in the Vale 😌

Kochi + Jesse | PG-13?ish? | 1,150 words

Warning for violence.

The nightmares were back.

After a long long time, Kochi had woken up around the hour of the wolf, sweaty and disoriented, the dread of the dream still clear in his mind. He had tried to shake it off and go back to sleep, but after tossing and turning for over an hour, he’d finally given up for the night.

Dressed in his gray robes, Kochi had descended the stairs from his bedchamber to his study. He lit fire to the fireplace and brewed some tea, watching the day slowly dawning outside. His window was eastbound and he’d always loved looking at the sunrise from it. Having his quarters high up in one of the castle towers had its perks, though Kochi often disliked the stairs.

Standing there in silence, looking at the golden glow behind the mountains and hills wrapped in morning haze, Kochi could feel the dread of the nightmare slowly fading away. He still remembered it vividly, though. He always did. The same nightmare had bothered him for years already.

A huge city, possibly King’s Landing or Old Town, burning. Red, hungry flames devouring streets, houses, trees and people… Kochi was watching it all from high up, probably in a tower similar to this one, feeling frightened and helpless. He saw the black smoke and heard the screams and he knew he should help, but he couldn’t. He was forced to just stand by the window and watch the destruction below.

Then, the scenery changed and Kochi was now watching a small company of knights riding along a rocky mountain path. They had a pennant, but he couldn’t make out the sigil on it. He never could. The last knight was a tall one, with a bow on his back. He was the first one to notice the mountain clan attack. They appeared behind cliffs and rocks, barging at the company. They were brute and their weapons were light compared to the swords and bows of the knights but they outnumbered them three to one.

The knights fell one by one, as did the attackers with well aimed arrows sticking up from their backs. Kochi saw the archer knight retreating slowly, still on horseback, and he hoped, like he always did, that the knight would make it. And yet, he saw the horse stumble in the rocky path, saw the knight fall down and the attackers jump at him. He saw the helmet dent from the blows, saw the burst of blood.

The blood. Suddenly, the blood was his and it was spilling from a wound on his forearm. Kochi winced and tried backing off but the chains on his wrists prevented his movements. He was in a dungeon, so much he could make out in the flickering torchlight.

A hooded figure stood in front of him, a bloody knife in his hand. Kochi knew the blood was his. He was being interrogated, but he couldn’t answer any of the questions. He didn’t know, but his interrogator didn’t believe him. After every failed answer, there was a new cut of knife.

“I can do this until there’s no blood left in you,” the hooded figure whispered. “I’ve got all the time in the world. Stupid maester.”

“You’re wasting your time,” Kochi managed to answer. Then, he screamed when the hooded figure growled and thrusted the blade through his foot—

Kochi closed his eyes and shivered, trying to rid himself of the afterimages. To further distract himself, he retreated behind his desk and pushed aside sparse parchments and piles of books as he sat down. He picked an empty sheet, dipped a quill in ink and started writing a letter lord Domoto had requested of him last night.

By the time Kochi was done with the letter, the sun had risen higher and he could hear noises outside as servants, knights and other castle folk had woken up and started their day. He closed and carefully sealed the letter and was just thinking of fetching a raven to send it off right away, when there was a faint knock on the door.

“Come in.” Kochi stood up and slipped the letter into the sleeve of his cloak.

The heavy wooden door opened and in walked the captain of lord Domoto’s household guard. Kochi raised a brow. The captain visited him quite often, but rarely before breakfast.

“Good morning,” Jesse greeted with a smile. He looked excited. “Did you hear the news already?”

“I don’t think so?”

“Lord Domoto decided to send out the scout group. And guess who’s the leader?”

“I suppose I’m looking at him?” Kochi said with a smile, though he could feel an uneasy twist in his stomach upon Jesse’s words.

“Correct!”

Kochi had feared this would happen. And now after the nightmare it made him even more anxious. He’d said so much to lord Domoto for days, but the lord had decided to go through with the mission anyway. Jesse was obviously over the moon about it all, and Kochi didn’t want to tamper his mood…

Regrettably, Jesse was too good at reading him. The captain took a step closer when Kochi remained silent.

“You’re still against this, aren’t you?”

“I just think it’s very dangerous and risky.”

“It’s just a scout mission,” Jesse tried reasoning. “Most likely we won’t even find anything, but that in itself will be an important discovery. And I’ll have the best knights of Redfort with me. We’ll be fine.”

Kochi sighed, letting his guard fall momentarily. “You promise?”

“Of course.” Jesse’s smile was reassuring and his eyes tender. He leaned closer, but Kochi backed off slightly.

“Not now–”

“Come on,” Jesse huffed. “We ride by noon and I’ll be gone for at least a fortnight.”

Fair point.

“Lock the door,” Kochi told him.

Once that was secured, he let Jesse push him against the desk and claim his lips with hungry kisses. Jesse was eager, like always, moaning into his mouth as Kochi deepened the kiss. Oh yes, he would miss Jesse while the other was gone. Kochi tried to push aside all his concerns and doubts and focus on the moment as he pulled Jesse to the sofa by the window and told him to undress.

It was a windy day. The blue falcon pennants of House Arryn and the red castles of Redfort were flapping in the wind. The scout group didn’t have any pennants as they were supposed to move discreetly.

Kochi stood in the courtyard with their lord and his family, sending the group off. He looked at Jesse who sat on his horse, looking stupidly handsome even in his modest traveling gear. Their eyes met and Jesse gave him one last smile. They had already exchanged the longer goodbyes earlier.

Kochi could only watch as the group rode through the gate. Jesse was the last one, with a bow and quiver strapped on his back.

You better keep your promise.
